Description A quick tutorial on how to needle sculpt!

Needle sculpting can turn a sphere into a wonderfully feline shaped head! Needle sculpting is nothing more than a glorified method of pinching spots and securing those pinches with thread.

I ALWAYS double my thread, and fold it over. I then use the two tails to go through the eye of the needle, leaving a loop where the knot usually is. That way there's nothing to snip or tuck in, it's all done for you! It does make it kind of troublesome though, since the thread slips out sometimes.

PLEASE let me know if you have any questions at all! I'll be more than happy to take additional pictures and/or provide a video the best I can.

The revamped video is up! [link]

I get ansty, even with tutorials, and always like seeing where things are going to go.

Oh, thank you so much for this!!
I have only made 1 plushy so far and I loved to make him, but of course, I just randomly tried out what I thought would work. XD
If I had known this technique his head would've been sculped much nicer, aww, poor thingy.. XD
I just.. I sewed another piece of fabric to the front of his face and stuffed some plush under it to form a makeshift muzzle. XD Also, his head looks very.. Frankenstein-like, while yours barely has any sewing lines over it, so much more peacefull and pretty! (and.. I'm quite sure.. less work, too XDXD)

I have a question, though.. I don't understand the second and third sentence of the underlined part in your 'artist's comments', but I think it would be of help to me (n my plushies X3) if I wΓ³ΓΊld understand, so could you please explain it to me?

Thank you again and once more, in advance.
Keep up the good work!

Can you make chubby ( chipmunk ) cheeks using this ? I've been trying to make an Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon version of Brittany and I never seem to get the shape of the head right ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThisUsernameFails In reply to shorthorn07 [2012-01-21 17:39:13 +0000 UTC]

Try taking the thread and using it to pinch from under the eye to the respective part under the chin. That should do it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shorthorn07 In reply to ThisUsernameFails [2012-01-23 05:49:02 +0000 UTC]

I'll give it a try. Thanks !!

ThisUsernameFails In reply to shorthorn07 [2012-01-23 06:07:23 +0000 UTC]

Let me know if it works out! Tie them in under the head on either side of where you want the chin to be, and that should give you the right "oomph" you'll need.

itsTradeMark [2011-07-26 19:37:12 +0000 UTC]

WITCHCRAFT.
I dun get it. xD How does the thread make the fabric stay... pinched?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThisUsernameFails In reply to itsTradeMark [2011-07-26 22:47:29 +0000 UTC]

It's like... Say you had a spherical stuffed piece. You tie a knot on one spot, and go through the whole form to the other side. You squish the areas together (The insertion point and where it came out) and tie it. Because the thread is shorter that going through it without pinching the edges together, they stay pinched!

Does that make sense? I can make a video if needed, hehe.

*semithreadjacks* Please make a video :') If you have time that is. May I also ask you how thick is your thread?

ThisUsernameFails In reply to ChaoticIntertwine [2011-07-27 18:55:45 +0000 UTC]

I use general use thread and double it. I'll make a video when I finish cleaning my room after work. Either way, I SHOULD have it done and up by tomorrow.

Do you think the same could be applied to a human plush?
Even if it can't, this is useful for animal plushies! :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThisUsernameFails In reply to FreakieGeekie [2011-07-19 15:13:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes it definitely could! I was actually thinking of doing that last night for fun but had no time.

On the back of her head is actually a (grotesque/cartoonish) human face that I figured people would be less interested in XD So yes, the same principle applies!
