Description A quick tutorial on how to needle sculpt!

Needle sculpting can turn a sphere into a wonderfully feline shaped head! Needle sculpting is nothing more than a glorified method of pinching spots and securing those pinches with thread.

I ALWAYS double my thread, and fold it over. I then use the two tails to go through the eye of the needle, leaving a loop where the knot usually is. That way there's nothing to snip or tuck in, it's all done for you! It does make it kind of troublesome though, since the thread slips out sometimes.

PLEASE let me know if you have any questions at all! I'll be more than happy to take additional pictures and/or provide a video the best I can.

The revamped video is up! [link]

Awesome!
I've been looking for a needle-sculpting tutorial and most of them aren't very helpful.

So, the staring head was a circle right? I'm trying to make a gremlin plush (from the movie Gremlins) would a circle head be right for that sort of thing or would it be better more oval?

Yep, just a sphere!

I would recommend just a circle. Their faces aren't very dimensional.

Awesome and thank you!

But... IΒ΄m still nervous about doing some plushies Because IΒ΄ve never tried before :s How do you make the head?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThisUsernameFails In reply to TheFailedDream [2011-07-04 23:21:49 +0000 UTC]

I made the head with 4 pieces shaped like this, and sew them all together.

It's simple, so don't be daunted!

And that way you can get the head round?

Ah, it is? I have to make 2 bunnies and then... 2 something

Hey, this is pretty cool! I just have one question:
In the very first image, what is keeping the thread from coming out? Is it doubled over?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ThisUsernameFails In reply to Kiwanii [2011-06-22 01:50:18 +0000 UTC]

I actually forgot to mention this, and will update:

I ALWAYS double my thread, and fold it over. I then use the two tails to go through the eye of the needle, leaving a loop where the knot usually is. That way there's nothing to snip or tuck in, it's all done for you! It does make it kind of troublesome though, since the thread slips out sometimes.

I suppose trial and error fills in the rest. And with all these unfinished projects...

ANYWAY! Thanks.

Wow, nice stuff! Thanks for uploading!

I take it you pinched in the center of the forehead too? I might have missed it, but I didn't see a mention of how that indent made its way into the form. ;

ThisUsernameFails In reply to ChinchillaDragoon [2011-06-21 14:46:25 +0000 UTC]

I originally started there, but as soon as I got going, I regretted it XD It gave the muzzle SLIGHTLY more of a bump out, but overall I would not recommend it.
When you connect the corners of the eyes to the bottom of the chin, that would pull it enough to make that effect.

ChinchillaDragoon In reply to ChinchillaDragoon [2011-06-21 11:22:27 +0000 UTC]

Actually, on second thought, I assume the little dent between the eyes was created to start the thread for the mouth.
