Description
Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds is known for countless well known industrial locomotives, from small 0-4-0's to the famous 0-6-0ST 'Austerities' of WW2. This is one of their designs, Hunslet 'Fitzwilliam' 0-6-0ST's. 44 of this design were built between 1923 and 1958, with choices for 12-, 14- and 15-inch diameter cylinders. Like most Industrials, the Fitzwilliam's were used mostly in Mines, collieries and quarries in the Yorkshire / Midlands, with one working at a Welsh power station.Much like its younger and stronger siblings, the WD Austerities, several found themselves away from their home country. Four were exported to Peru, with another one being sold to Australia. Said Aussie locomotive, known as Public Works Department No. 79 (No. 1825/1938) is currently on display at the New South Wales Rail Museum in Thirlmere. None of the Peru examples were saved. As of 2022, only 9 of the class are in preservation.
