So, I recently read this article on ToughPigs about who people consider modern or classic muppets, and how there really is no concrete line to divide the two. And that got me thinking that since what you define as classic or modern depends on what era/decade you grew up in, just how many of the show's staple characters debuted in each decade? So I made this chart to detail my findings.

1960s-1970s: Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog, Cookie Monster, Grover, Guy Smiley, Roosevelt Franklin, Herry Monster, Prairie Dawn, Mr. Snuffleupagus, Mr. Johnson, The Amazing Mumford, The Martians, Count Von Count, The Two-Headed Monster, Barkley

1980s: Telly Monster, Elmo, Grundgetta, Forgetful Jones, Hoots the Owl, Honkers, Dingers, Alice

1990s: Benny Rabbit, Humphrey, Ingrid, Baby Natasha, Baby Bear, Rosita, Stinky the Stinkweed, Zoe

2000s: Curly Bear, Louie, Abby Cadabby, Murray Monster, Ovejita

2010s: Segi, Julia, Sam, Daniel, Elena, Rose, Rudy, Gonger, Gabrielle

2020s: Tamir, Tango, Wes, Elijah, Ji-Young

If you add each category up, it amounts to 19 characters for the 60s and 70s, 8 for the 80s, 8 for the 90s, 5 for the 2000s, 9 for the 2010s, and 5 for the 2020s. So the 60s and 70s had the most character debuts, while the 2000s and 2020s tied for the least debuts. Very interesting information.
