Agreed, that would be so completely uncomfortable. But the things you could buy with all that gold in turn...
No no no! Comfort before riches, I say.

In one episode of Family Guy Peter attempts to jump into a pile of gold coins and he ends up (realistically) hurting himself, badly! But yes gold would not be comfortable to sleep on!Β XD

You could try burying yourself in it. But given that gold is REALLY heavy, that would probably be even less comfortable.

you do know why dragons sleep on piles of gold, right?
It is not because it is comfortable, but because there is but one weakness to a dragon of legends, his underbelly.
If one were to stab its underbelly with anything, it is Game Over for that dragon.Β The dragon actually rests on the pile of gold, so that the metals will become embedded onto their scaly skin, effectively making a piece of armor to protect its vulnerable underbelly.

In some other stories its just because they have a love of gold so they hoard as much as they can. =3

Theres a entire page devoted to this on tv tropes tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.phpβ¦
Smaug stole the treasure in the Hobbit because Dragons love treasure. The extra armour it gave his underbelly was just a bonus for him it wasn't the reason he took it.

BenMan888 In reply to Thornacious [2014-02-04 02:02:00 +0000 UTC]
besides, I was talking about them sleeping on it, not why they stole it.

BenMan888 In reply to Thornacious [2014-02-04 02:00:10 +0000 UTC]
Stealing the treasure, yes.
But, as I recall, Smaug had a pretty large cave.Β Large enough for him to lie comfortably, spread out,Β in a place where there wasn't a single gold coin there.Β Just cause they love the treasure, shouldn't mean that they would have SLEPT on as well.Β They slept and laid around on it because they used it as armor as well.Β In otherwords, they don't lay on it because it is comfortable, they lay on it to gain extra defense.
Being a future-author on dragons, I have done my research on Dragons.

Thornacious In reply to BenMan888 [2014-02-04 03:39:02 +0000 UTC]
With respect you would need to find quite a few other examples for this to be considered the main reason dragons sleep on their treasure.Β
As is it's just one of a few reasons for it if the book/film etc even bothers to explain it.

Beowulf, I believe is the story title's spelling.
Plus I read a book that took all factual (based on books that author read and other sources) information about them, and he/she said that was in many-a-story.

Thornacious In reply to BenMan888 [2014-02-05 02:26:43 +0000 UTC]
Truthfully can't recall seeing it in anything other than the Hobbit Book. Not seen or read Beowulf and as I really like dragons I've watched a lot,
In any case as its a fantasy creature you could give a hundred different reasons for why they do it. There is no definitive answer.
Bit like asking how they produce flame. Read a big long complicated reason for it in one and then have it casually described as magic in another. =3

Actually, I am not ashamed to admit that I amΒ not a child,Β and I still believe that Dragons exist for real, if only because there is evidence like, all over the place.
How they can function according to science:Β Fire-breathing, there is a chemical that is very common inside a living body, that when combined with Hydrogen, will ignite when it makes contact with Oxygen;Β They protect their mouths with a gene that is in some mice down in South America that makes them pretty much immune to fire, but have it in their mouths.Β Flying:Β look at birds and pterosaurs.Β end of discussion on that.Β How they would be able to hide their remains from our sight:Β When the chemical that creates their fire, combines with the chemical in their stomach, it dissolves, not just skin, and tissue, but bones as well.Β Something the size of your typical dragon, would take about 2 weeks to fully disappear from this.
How to prove that they aren't myths:Β If you look at when stories of any and all dragons first appeared, they were pretty much simultaneous.Β And they appeared during the time when all corners of the world thought that the world was flat, so no one even tried to sail back and forth, meaning no form of communication between them.Β Yet, somehow, all the dragons look so similar, that if you were to go into the past, take one dragon from, say, North America, and transport it to like, present day Germany, or Japan, they would both say, in their own language, "that is a dragon" the differences would be like, one dragon has green scales vs red scales.Β One dragon might be slightly longer than another, or one might have 4 claws instead of 3.
So I believe that they are still here, somewhere.Β We just haven't found them yet.

Well each to his own beliefs.
But I'm afraid I'm of the mindset that they are just a fantasy creature.
