I think the gist of it is:
It's fun to dress up and pretend your someone else. We all did it when we were children and there is still a part in our brains that has that desire to escape our own personality, (in which we spend all our time with and with I personally grow tedious off occasionally) and take on the characteristics of someone else. That's the way I see it anyway.

I think most people do it cause it's fun to dress as a character, perhaps one that you admire from your favorite fandom

So, what about it confuses you? My definition of "cosplay" is dressing up as someone/thing fictional, and taking pictures of yourself or other cosplayers

Because clearly, the definition of it is the only aspect you find confusing. Yep.
