Description for my father's mother who passed on to the next life long ago.  when i was around 4 she showed me a traditional style japanese painting she was working on - depicting the history of many kingdoms [the history of japan] across the parchment. it was unfinished. she said i could finish it one day.  i was never able to see her but one time again but have tried to remember her and what this painting looked like since then [the 70's]

i do not paint that style. i do not have a huge knowledge of the history of japan. however her knowledge and love for japan impacted me quite a bit. her love for art literature and history impacted me. i find myself often finishing that painting in strange ways and also leaving it unfinished - traveling across the unfinished painting if you will.

her name was margaret anne shick.

that is why i have often called myself

margaret

or

black margaret - aside from

thredd.

*edit- i was just reminded by my parents- who have a better recollection than i- that my grandmother was actually working on a mural painting using inks - attempting to chronicle the progression of the dynasties in china along with the natural beauty and landscape. the painting was "very long" from right to left" as i recall and as i said - it was unfinished.

my grandmother was also well studied on the history of japan and most things pertaining to the orient.

my grandmother worked for ohio arts co. and was on a think tank which invented the etcha-sketch.

she also - as it was told to me-

took a man's black tin lunch pail- painted it with flowers - and this became a purse for women-

and "possibly"

was used for a photo shoot on a then popular women's magazine for a model type like a "twiggy"

[possibly twiggy herself- but i do not want to say this if it is not true]

..

i am not sure the exact details -so i don't want any of this taken out of context.

she also made a lot of shadow boxes -

with little toy mice and rats which she made clothing for-  and tiny furniture.

these were all over her house

and from her i learned

"one could make a toy out of practically anything"

and furthermore

"one could draw these toys …"

..

i love you!

i talked to my mom- and she told me - my father said it was not the history of japan my grandmother was practicing to painting with inks

it was the history of china-  however she had a lot of books on all of asia. she was making all kinds of art.

i just now came here to try to correct this and i was delightfully surprised to see you on here!

this is super great!

love

R.
