I don't think Theon will die - but yeah, I also don't think we'll get him getting revenge on Ramsay. Which is why I said it's only something I'd /like/ to see, not something I expect we'll actually get. ^^

Great, great ending, although the fact Ramsay dies is heartbreaking... from my point of view, at least. I know he'll probably die in the next book, but I just keep hoping he'll last until the end.

Ehh, they didn't act like a true family to him at all though. Cat, Jon, Sana, Bran and Arya all express dislike and/or indifference to him at some point. Theon was obviously scared of Ned ("Lord Eddard had tried to play the father from time to time, but to Theon he had always remained the man whoβd brought blood and fire to Pyke and taken him from his home. As a boy, he had lived in fear of Starkβs stern face and great dark sword.").Β
Of course, even if the people are nice to you in that situation, there is absolutely no chance to have a proper family life if you're a prisoner who will be beheaded immediately if your father steps out of line (and everyone knows about that). Who wants to get close to a person who could die any day?
The only person Theon had a good relationship with was Robb, but that does not equal a good family life. Β Especially not if you have to live with a sword over your head for 10 years.
The fact that his stay with these people is still the closest to an actual family Theon ever had and that he romanticizes it to give himself some comfort during the worst time in his life, is sad and nothing else.
The Lannisters were overall nice to Sansa too. Would you think she deserves horrible torture until she loses her very identity as well, if she would take Casterly Rock with an army?Β

Sorry to interject but Theon was kind of a low life before it all went down to begin with, that's why most of the Starks they didn't like him. I never really saw them as his family (even though he desperately wanted to be one of them, something that's said both in the show and the books which I just finished reading not three days ago so you can rest assured the memories are fresh) except for Robb, Robb who he betrayed, he invaded his home, killed people he loved, and lead to the destruction of Winterfell. All that being said I think Theon's paid enough, I'm willing to like him, but never did I feel sorry for him knowing what he did, in Westeros the stuff he did is punishable by death like four times over so I figure he's gotten off lucky. Whatever the Starks were to him is irrelevant in my opinion, Robb was his friend, Robb was perhaps the only person to ever really trust and lose Theon, and then he stabbed him in the back. I won't deny it was a difficult decision he was faced with, try to win the love of his father or stay loyal to hisΒ (honorary)Β brother, but life's full of hard choices, and Theon made the wrong one, he's paid for it but only just. I'm on his side again, but that doesn't mean I've forgiven him, I just think he's been punished enough.Β

Well, Theon kind of turned into a douche /during/ his stay at Winterfell though. It's probably not surprising that someone in his situation would turn out the way he did. It's no excuse, of course, but understandable.Β
And yes, he does /want/ to be a Stark, he suffers quite a lot from Stockholm syndrome, after all. It's the only thing that comes close to a "proper" family that he ever had. I think this is also kind of a motivation why he took Winterfell as well. To make it part him by force, because he could never had it otherwise.Β
I really don't think that Theon got off lucky - I mean even he states that he prefers to die rather than continue living several times. Actually, I think a proper beheading (by Robb or whoever) would have been a much "nicer" end to him - in hindsight.
I agree wit you, though. Theon might not have betrayed the Starks as a whole - but he does betray Robb. He feels guilty about this too, it eats him up, but still he did it and he has to live with the consequences of his decision with absolutely no chance of forgiveness (since Robb is dead). Basically the only person who really liked him died hating him. I think that's also what is so nicely tragic about Theon.
On the other hand, Robb was an idiot too, for sending Theon off to Pyke. I mean, even if Theon would have disagreed with his dad and wouldn't have wanted to join in the raids, he'd just end up trapped on Pyke. lol They really didn't think this idea through. Ahh, poor naive boys.Β

Objectively, Tyrion is a pretty good match (was hand of the king once, from a wealthy house) - it's not as if marriages in Westeros are love marriages where the woman gets much to say anyway. Also, Theon got multiple thrashings in Winterfell as well. Overall, Sansa got all the pretty clothes and nice foods she could wish for. She had some friends there. If this is apparently enough that Theon should see the Starks as his family and be loyal to them at all costs, it should also account for Sansa.
