Description A few days ago I met someone in the train and we had a nice talk.
He told me he had seen waxwings today and I must admit I was a bit jealous.
The next day I planned to stay at home because someone would come by to paint my house.
And then the painter called: he couldn't make it, since he caught the flew.
Which left me with a whole day to fill and i decided to try my luck and go search for some waxwings...
And guess what: I found them!
Unfortunately the weather wasn't all that (grey & windy) and they were a bit far away for my 420mm. So no high quality pictures...
But hey....I saw my first Waxwings, how cool is that?!

They are not cedar waxwings. They are BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS! But still, I like them.

Actuall, I like the way they are silhouetted against the sky. A blue sky might have swallowed them up.

I love waxwings wish we had them here...I'd see them in southern California around Christmas - they'd come in and decimate our pyracantha that I was wanting for wreaths

I met mine ( [link] ) a year ago and it was wonderful! The bird was drunk so I could come close to it and I hope there will be more encounters in the future.

So you are lucky! To see more of them at once - it must have been great!

WAY cool

It's a pity you couldn't get nearer. I remember that the only time I saw waxwings (well, several times in fact, but all in the same winter), they didn't really care that I was standing right underneath their bush. Were these ones shyer, or just in an inaccessible place?

thrumyeye In reply to Sinande [2010-10-30 21:20:08 +0000 UTC]

They were really shy, unfortunately. I was very quiet and managed to get closer, but every time some other human walked by they were all gone immediately....

And not only one...FOUR!How lucky!
I remember the year that I saw for the first time an Eurasian Jay...he was about 4 or 5 meter away from me and he was very peaceful...

Wonder why they're called "Bohemian" waxwings when they don't live in Bohemia. We just get them for the winter, and only some years at that.

Beautiful birds, you were very lucky.

Gorgeous! I hope they get down to my neck of the woods. I went looking for migrants today along the strawberry trail, on a particular part that's laden with berries but so far the numbers are a bit disappointing. I did however see my first 3 Fieldfares and a Redwing, which makes it Winter in my book .

there's five in that picture. that's probably more than i've seen in my life. i think they know when their favorite berries happen to be ripe, or fermented properly, and only stick around long enough to eat their fill before moving on. it seems that way anyway. i've never seen more than one at a time. i think the one's we have are cedar waxwings, but i never get a close enough look to tell the difference.

They're beautiful! They have such colorful wings, and I love the feathers on the back of their heads - it looks like a stylin' hairdo for the cool birds.

every time i've seen a waxwing, it's been entirely by chance... usually while out running or hiking, and i find them in spots i wasn't expecting.

even when i find them by ear i have trouble seeing them.

congrats on hunting them down.
