Description
I really don't like this.. but I felt I should upload it anyway so I can bitch about it...The whole mood I was going for was lost after the sketch stage. It was originally set by the composition but the color just stole the limelight, and the color isn't strong enough to carry the piece. Plus there are the perspective issues and anatomy issues that inevitably crop up when I don't use any references. The candlelight gave me multiple light sources which I have discovered I am not good at handling and screwed up the atmosphere considerably. Is this a dark room? Are the rocks red or just absorbing a lot of red light?
On top of all that, I couldn't seem to decide what style I was going for. The rocks were supposed to be a mix of volcanic rocks, but they just ended up looking like sloppy goo and sticks. Is the style supposed to be realistic or stylized? I don't know.
This is one type of painting that might have benefited from using two layers, but I stubbornly paint directly onto the background, so the figure looks squished onto the rocks.
Anyway, I'm annoyed at it, but I don't feel like putting any more time into this painting. It's time to scrap and start anew. But it's not like the concept was all that revolutionary to begin with, so maybe this will just go into my "Abject Failures" folder.
So, how is everyone's weekend coming along?

Yeah, when I take things from sketch to ink/colored, I am usually super freaked about how they'll turn out and feel bitterly dissapointed in the final product. Usually, I just put it away then come back to it later, and hope it looks better. XD

I think it looks pretty good! The only thing I'd tweak would be to use some outlines for definition in the environment like you've got on the figure. Mostly on the candles, since the stand out so much being white.
I know sometimes it's more important to say "I'll just do it better next time" than to finish a piece. No point in running up against a wall if you don't have to.

It's a really neat concept, indeed. I like how the candles are so drippy and the colors. While it might help for the foreground rocks to be defined a bit more, I think the back ones look really good. It does look like you were really torn with the realism/stylized thing, but I must say I quite like the cloth - well done with the folds! It almost seems like it could use a bit more shadow, but perhaps not. Overall I think it is rather lovely.
This weekend does not find me at my best, certainly. :/

aside from aforementioned wonky-arm, i actually really like this. the folds/shades of her skirt especially.

Well then, I suppose as far as "abject failures" go then this is a pretty damn good abject failure.
And my weekend has been full of tired and neglect.

I approve of the fact that she is not an unrealistically skinny stick!
And I like the colours. You are perhaps being a tad hard on yourself. (However, it's also good to be critical and strive for better, so I won't tell you off too thoroughly!)

I don't avoid idealization, but my ideal body type is stuck somewhere in the 1800s, or maybe greek antiquity.

I don't understand where you are coming from on this piece. I think it's absolutly stunning and I was drawn to it immediately. It has an intimate feel about it, as if invited into the place with the girl.
The only problem I notice is the arm is a bit small and that's only after I read the comment above.
Overall I think it is a lovely piece.

I'll agree with the anatomy, I feel like the shoulder/ arm connection could be a bit more refined and the arm itself is a little small. As for the rocks... rocks are some wacky objects, I didn't think they looked strange upon first seeing this, and after reading your description I still don't think they look off! It looks like you've attempted several times of rocks and they look the way they ought.
Honestly I love the colors and contrasts. I get the impression that the chamber/ cave she's in is lit outside of the frame of the picture, and the candles in the immediate painting aren't the only source. Overall yeah, its maybe not your 100% amazing brilliant perfect piece but for me its at least high 90's XD And I get the feeling that you learned a lot from doing it, which should give it validity no matter what <3

Thanks for the crit
I did learn a few things, but I still feel dumb, why is that? >.< I just liked this sketch WAY too much. Whenever I like something a lot in the sketch stage I'm always mega disappointed with the final result.

My weekend is depressing.

Why is it depressing? (mine is too)

I think it's just a matter of working those kinks out in future pieces.
Art block. I have the urge to create, but I don't have anything to expend it on. That, and frustrations about how things are going for me right now. Classes are boring, and my hall mates are obnoxious.
