I really like this a lot. Great work!! i love the fantasy look and the blown out background. I feel like the perspective is a little off, but it works so maybe you meant it to be that way. And as I said before, I really like it!

oh wow! i really like it. especially the foliage on the trees. see that's exactly what i'm trying to do with mine, it's not there yet though. actually quite far. Nice work on the grass too.

I love the way you draw the trees fading out further back in all of your foresty-pieces, and that jumps out at me in this one, especially. And, as always, your use of colour never ceases to amaze me <3!

the little bird is a nice addition :> I like how it brings some of that vibrant blue into the foreground. I love how you painted the forest too, the sense of depth comes across great through the trunks that fade away into the mist

sweet. all i remember of my senior year of graphic design school was my portfolio project. it was kind of like self-improvement, since we had to go back over all our old projects from the previous two years. good times.
how many of your classmates are on dA? would you say that being part of dA has helped your studies?

thundercake In reply to unwanderinggirl [2009-02-17 19:23:25 +0000 UTC]
A few people from my department are on dA, but not many. Some of my teachers are.
I don't think being on dA has helped me directly in my studies, but I have met several artists on here that were helpful in their own right.

heh. i was just curious. i didn't even know about dA in design school, and have only really begun to find it helpful from a creative standpoint, even if i haven't really put up anything to invite critique. good to know, though.

Critique is pretty rare on here.. I find it's pretty good for moral support, though, lol.

Beautiful scenery~ I love the way the trees fade into the background and the texture of the leaves and the grass is fantastic! One thing I need to point out though: the water has a good texture, but it looks too solid, like it's not watery enough. Otherwise it's a wonderful landscape!

I like this a lot. The color choice and consistent bridge shapes are very eye-catching and the lighting really soothes the eye without making it boring.
There are three pet peeves of mine: the front Bridge appears a bit flat, the road appears to break off after the bridge ends to the right of the viewer, and the light is a bit too bright for my eye. I'll break it down piece by piece for sanity's sake.
The Lighting: The end of the area is a bit too bright. It seems as though there's some kind of half-powered mini-sun blocking the view. The lighting also appears a bit inconsistent, as the tree's light appears to be coming from the side to the left of the eye, when the light source is behind and slightly above it, only slightly to the left. The Bridge also has a few lighting problems, as the light leaks toward the left when the light is stationed to the right of it.
The Road and Bridge: The road seems just fine, save for the area it is supposedly meeting the bridge. The Bridge does not seem to have a clear ending, and I get the feeling that someone walking on it would fall off when they got to the right. The fact that the road begins again behind the tree baffles me a bit.
However, the background trees and foreground accents appear very well-thought and stationary which gives me a feeling of tranquility and peace, even with the slight confusion of the light and bridge/road. I hope you can find a way to fix these and I might be able to get an idea of where you're taking me with this piece and maybe I'll feel like I'm really there.
Until then, I hope you find this useful!

This is lovely, I really quite enjoy your muted colours and the depth you portrayed. You know where to place your brushstrokes It's interesting how you indicate things, without making this look rough.
The only thing disturbing me is the front bridge. It kind of pops out of place. I guess what bugs me is that it looks flat, becuase the actual walkway is not lower than the 'walls', and also I wonder where this bridge leads to. It seems to just continue downwards behind the curvature and hill, and I imagine you would fall off it then And I think that even with this rather diffuse lighting situation you might want to make clear that it blocks some light from falling onto the grass. You need no really dark shadow for that, but I think making a visible shadow line might help this
But that aside I very much like this painting, hope you didn't mind my critique
Well done!
Daniel

Lovely colors, though not enough warm colors for me. Those bridges look steep to me also. All in all love your painterly effects. (: And the lovely perspective.

Haha, I just want to go right from my sketch to the finished thing, is that too much to ask?
I should start uploading my unfinished stuff, then I'd look more productive (90% of all art I've done is unfinished )
