In 1919 the Northeyan military bought half a dozen Renault FT-17 light tanks for evaluation. After two years of testing they decided to start design a native tank based of it, this would become the K-1 Tankette of 1923. The K-1 would test out several of the features which would appear on its successor, the K-2 Light Tank of 1928. Among these features were the suspension which were considered revolutionary for the time. The prototype K-2 tanks were built with 37/22 calibre guns fed by a revolving magazine, the magazine proved to be mechanically unreliably and hard to fabricate so it was dropped for the production model. The commander and gunner-loader shared the turret basket while the driver sat alone in the front of the tank. The K-2 would go on to become successful on the home market with a few sells abroad, those primarily being bought by the Soviets for evaluation and comparison with the Vickers Mark E. By the outbreak of war Northey would find itself in the midst of transition with the new K-4 Light Tank having been introduced the year before. Most of the K-2 tanks sent to the continent were upgraded with a new turret and 37/40 calibre gun in line with the K-4 with only a few of the ones to see combat mounting their original turret and gun.
