Description
I hadn't seen anyone design or draw the Bit yet, from MLP FIM, so I figured I'd take a shot at designing it!Words on the back of the coin are: Prosperitas, Diligo, Parilitas. Latin for "Prosperity, Love, Equality"

This is absolutely beautiful work. I honestly thought these were real in the picture. If you do make these, I would like to buy one.

Thanks! Yeah, I advise anyone interested in 3D to download Blender and give it a try. Honestly, there wasn't much setup involved for the lighting or renderer. Thanks to the Cycles rendering engine included in the program, you can do photoreal really easily.

This was done in Blender? I have that program. Had it a couple years back, and the controls and buttons seem to have changed since. I look at it and I am more confused than I was the first time I used it. lol. I should give it some more time though. I'm usually a fast learner.

Well, before Blender 2.5 I couldn't use it at all. I was strictly Maya / Zbrush (and those are still my main tools).
But when 2.5 (and subsequent versions) came out, they completely redesigned the interface to be much more like Maya / Max and overall much more welcoming to newcomers. Now's probably the best time there's been to get into Blender. Thanks to it's rendering, it's simple UVing tools, and it's mesh modifiers, I install it on any computer I'm going to get work done on.

Bits = Literally equal to dollars. On some bit-related cutie marks, they appear to sometimes have DOLLAR signs.

Very well done! I simply love the design. I'd love to buy a few (you know...if they were real). You know, for a minute I didn't realize these were made on a computer.

Either way, they can be real, but if it goes through Shapeways it might have to be more expensive (not of my own volition, just the production costs) and would take a few weeks to make / ship. I'll be posting a picture of the test coin I had printed off of shapeways when it gets here at the end of the month, to see if people like it.
Otherwise, I'm still waiting on Kickstarter to approve or disapprove of my submission, and we'll take it from there. I'd love to get them made and I'd really REALLY hate to dash the hopes of the hundreds of people who want this coin. For me? It's really just simple flattery. I've never had this kind of response to my work before and it's very humbling.
As for the render, that's the beauty of Blender Cycles!

Purely awesome, I'd be even ready to buy one. It would be interesting if you could have this as medallion (Idk, in some kind of transparent container).
About coin, really original and interesting idea. I belive the real bit would look like that. I also like the usage of latin, it fits the words. Just ... how would ponies know latin. However, they speak in over twenty languages, so why not latin
What about size? Is it meant to be big?

I would love to, but I'm not sure if I want that kind of publicity before I'm sure I can mass-produce these. I mean, it will be available on shapeways.com anyways (albeit more expensive :\ not at my request but simply because of the process). I ordered a test coin from there and it should be here at the end of the month, before I decide if it's good enough quality to use as a fallback option. I'll be sure to post a picture of the physical coin once I receive it.

If you were to produce a large quantity of these, how much would you charge per coin.

tidalkraken In reply to xabrin [2012-05-01 17:14:24 +0000 UTC]
I'm looking at companies that mass produce novelty coins and the like. If my estimates are correct, I would sell them at about 10$ a piece. However, to do that I'd need to buy 100+ in bulk (which wouldn't be a huge issue but still inconvenient).
I'm also looking into Shapeways. I ordered a shiny gold version of this coin off of there. It should arrive at the end of the month and I'll take it from there. Pricing for that one is higher, around 40$

Maybe you could look into using Rockethub or Kickstarter to sell them? That way you don't have to order them if not enough people want them and nobody loses money, and if an unprecedented number of people respond maybe you can get a better deal or something.
I saw someone do it with trading card sleeves, but I don't know how it turned out.

hmm, I'm not 100% on how kickstarter works. Is it possible to just raise money for the coins by selling them pre-emptively through the fundraiser? What if I don't raise enough money?

xelaispwn In reply to tidalkraken [2012-05-02 00:22:30 +0000 UTC]
Ceafin is exactly right. You submit your project, and set a goal (100 coins at $10 a pop comes out to $1000, so you'd probably make it a little over that for example, to accommodate shipping and other fees) and a timeframe. People can back your project and pledge a donation. You can also set rewards- in this case, it'd be $10 gets you 1 coin, $20 2 coins, and so on. If you raise enough for your goal (or over) they give you the money and take a tiny bit- I remember hearing 4% somewhere. If you don't make your goal, everyone gets their money back and we all go on with our lives.

Was totally going to suggest kickstarter myself. If you do this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put that stuff up on Reddit, I will buy some. And I am fairly confident if we are all buying 100's of $$$ of pony swag like shirts, bags, posters, etc, something like these awesome coins would be no problem.
