I personally use Fanfiction.net . I've had very few problems with it and it allows for a wide collection of stories (mainly fanfiction, of course). It even has a section in their rules where they have a list of authors who they respect the wishes of in terms of writing fanfiction (the writers don't want fan stories of their works, so the site respects their wishes and refuses to allow fanworks of their literature on it). I don't know of any other site that does that except AO3 like Tigeus suggested.

AO3 is only for fanfiction / transformative works, orginal fiction gets deleted because that's not what they aim at. If you write fanfiction it is a wonderful place, but you have to be aware that they have a strict non-monetization-rule due to providing the writers with the legal safety they offer.

Not true. There are many writers who post original fiction on Ao3, that never sees removal. Ao3 is for transformative works of both fanfiction and original. As can be seen here:  archiveofourown.org/series/193…. Even with providing writers legal coverage, it still is overall better than FFN, Wattpad and other places that say they cater to writers. I have found Ao3 the best overall in terms of activity, user-friendly, and promotion for both new and veteran writers.

archiveofourown.org/tos#IV.H . If you look it up, non-fanwork is not allowed. Just because something hasn't been removed does not necessarely mean it's allright, and it would be a shame if people migrated there to publish their works only to have it all deleted.  FFN e.g. has looked the other way a long time regarding explicit works, but when Fifty Shades of Grey made the news for having been a Twilight-Fic originally on FFN, they started deleting a lot of explicit works because now it had everyone's attention. Maybe lots of non-fannish works have not been noticed on AO3, but they are not what the archive was created for and could always be removed.

AMINO:

As someone who has used amino  I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking to sell your art and make some sort of living, but if your interested in just sharing your works its definitely a good place to do so!
I've found since the amino coin currency, most people aren't willing to spend actual money on art/adopts and instead will only want to use amino coins (which are absolutely useless unless u want to use them for buying art as well and adopts)
I'm actually leaving amino soon after using it for over a year for this reason, I have no use for coins anymore and the user-base in the aminos I'm apart of aren't too willing to spend money on my art, though I might keep the app installed for posting art purposes instead of selling purposes.

TL;DR, Amino is best for sharing art and not for selling art as many people rather use amino coins than usd.

I personally recommend Ao3 if you're a writer. I have been on several other platforms for writers and found that Ao3 has the best to offer in terms of publishing. It's more user-friendly, easy to navigate, the tagging system really helps to group fics, but makes it so much more streamlined and easier to find specific stories, and it really gives a boost to new and upcoming writers while still giving niches to veterans. I have been on Ao3 for two years now publishing my fanworks and I get triple the attention I have gotten anywhere else. I still use FFN (fanfiction.net) only because I've been a user on there since 2001 and have really old stories published there, but it's becoming more of a hassle to upload new fics and even update my novels due to the system FFN uses, while I can do it in half the time on Ao3.

I even debated on cross-posting to Wattpad at one time and found its way too hard to navigate, difficult to track down specific fandoms and stories related to it, and even harder to post anything. I don't recommend that site, especially to newer writers, where you have better sites like Ao3 that are much more userfriendly.

FeatherHeart22 In reply to kelticdragon [2020-04-24 13:55:04 +0000 UTC]

Isn't AO3 only for fanfics? My stories aren't usually part of any existing fictional universe, instead consisting of entirely original characters, places and events.
And my stories are always fetish (tickling) related. That's something else to keep in mind.
And also, I like being able to upload all sorts of little pictures and support material for my stories and for roleplaying... where can I do all of these things in one place other than on DA? :/
Not to mention, there is such a huge community of similarly minded people here already...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kelticdragon In reply to FeatherHeart22 [2020-04-24 14:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Actually, it's not. It's a misconception it seems a lot of people have. I am subscribed to one author who has an entire series of original works as can be seen here:  archiveofourown.org/series/193… so, to note, Ao3 doesn't strictly cater to just fanfiction writers. :>

It also doesn't limit the types of works loaded. Why there is such a huge base for tagging. So, even fetish based stories are widely accepted. The only requirement is to tag any works properly to give ample and thorough warning to readers so they know what type of story they are about to read. You can even load images to stories/chapters. I know they are working on adding features to upload videos, music, and other creative material. RP might be something else on their list of things to implement. However, when it comes to RP itself, I can recommend  www.f-list.net/ though warning this isn't for minors as it is an adult-only site, and  www.rprepository.com/ which is an RP site dedicated to such, is family-friendly, has lots of features available where you can even create character websites, forums to find people on and a TON of features that Kim (the site owner) is working on implementing. It isn't exactly an all-in-one site, but it's better than nothing and offers a lot of alternatives since DA seems to be going by the wayside. :/

Really nice of you to write a guide like this! As someone who has used tumblr for almost 10 years now i just want new users to be prepared that the staff absolutely does not give a fuck and if your main reason for leaving deviantart is the new layout and the bad communication with staff then tumblr will be a WILD RIDE for ya'll because holey moley do they like to randomly change fonts or colors or remove features just because they feel like it. With the NSFW ban they pretty much killed half their userbase because even SFW users were flooded with sometimes thousands of wrong NSFW claims made by an unreliable bot. Tumblr is a nightmare train rolling in high speed towards a cliff and i love using it but if you are leaving dA because things seem unstable and badly communicated then i'm not sure if i would recommend tumblr out of all the places :'))

I've been on this website for 10 years and I feel like I've peaked early on with some dumb photoshops and artwork that look like shit compare to now. My work can only get some attention if I submit them into clubs, especially if they're recognisable characters like Spyro, Lightning and Dante and even then, so what chance do I have in creating original stories, characters and concepts? There's also the fear of paid commissions being something stupid like obscure Disney characters or feet fetishes, or just about any kind of grey-area fetishes that are considered more acceptable on this hellscape of a site than sex. No thanks!

If I choose to move my work to other sites, which one would be the best to put my previous work just to get my foot in the door?

i know the feeling

i was part of a group for friends (i am technically one of the second in commands) where we spammed our own art in it but without a direction for the group to go on, it was abandonned. i tried closing it down but only the maker of the group could close it. it is not possible since i am the last member still having my account on DA. the only help DA offered is "message the maker so he close the group" : his own account is closed!

and now someone is spamming art in it and i can't do anything about it.

its a reality but some really find them useful. and in these comments, ive read that it was someone's only way of being discovered

stevemacqwark In reply to Hergman [2020-04-24 23:09:36 +0000 UTC]

Some are definitely more discovered than others and I can say their work is at least "distinct", which is more polite than yelling "STOP SPAMMING FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!". I used to draw loads and dump them into clubs but nowhere the near the amount I've seen in my time here.

I'm happy that I've finally went to these forums to discuss art with others.

Pixiv.
Pros: lots of good artwork, tutorials, and features if you draw anime then you could check this out literally im not joking how good a majority of the art there is. They have a lot more features imo then deviant art does and it has a very crude page set up compared to deviant art but its not bad. Also theres always streams, contests and stuff on the front page. I think there is also clip studio/manga studio paint and firealpaca linking as well? You can have your username be whatever you want as well which is a bonus but also can be a con.
Also you can post as many images as you want at a time. They do have furry artwork there as well!
Cons: japanese speaking, but quite a few actually know some english. You can find english speaking users pretty easily though. Though most I've seen are adults. Kind of hard to get exposure. Your competing with a lot of very very good artists.
I mean theres fetish art there just like deviantart but I mean at least its drawn well.

HI! I just want to add something about instagram, I'm on desktop only (old phone) and I found a solution to post on there without an emulator. Simply right clic- inspect - on the top left you'll be able to change your device, just pick a phone and refresh the page and voilà ^^ you can post (with some restrictions, I can't put multiple pictures in one publication for example)

Thank you for reminding me of the existence of Weasyl. I took a look at it a couple years ago, but promptly forgot about it. Now I actually took the time to register, and so far it's looking very good! I'll probably use it as my new art-home once DA switches to eclipse completely.

When it comes to sites to post art on, Waterfall.social is also a thing. It's similar to Tumblr and Pillowfort. The community is pretty small at the moment, but art does get around somewhat. They also have a commission marketplace. The site is still in development, but a most of the important features are there.
They also allow NSFW content, but the rules are stricter than on Pillowfort.
