Why would they do that? Almost no one uses it and they know we hate it.

Apparently it is because they have been bought out by Wix... (Or so some on the community here says...)
Which are sadly one of the many group behind the new wave of un-navigable and barely usable internet one-page sites.
They most probably have no experience dealing with a community which likes to use the web as a tool, and browser, and mail service, instead of a blog archive and advertisement campaign bordering on the social networking. (Personally, I'm still very uncomfortable about social networks and will probably remain so...)
As such... the best learning experience they could get from forcing eclipse, is if the community here starts to fight back. Either by boycott, migrations, or massive mailing campaign and petitions.
With luck, they might get down from their honeymoon of destroying the PC interface to carter only to tabletoids.
With less luck... we are looking at the end of one of the best site out there to share, sell, and create a community around one's art.
Because frankly... as helpful as the above post is, it still underline a grave point. There is nothing quite like deviant art out there...
And with Eclipse, there will be no deviant art... period.
I've been afraid of this since that button showed up. At least they had the decency to warn us.
But somehow, I thought that since DA was for artists... they would realize in time how unmanageable such a change was.
I apparently was wrong.
Meanwhile, the options to fight back that have already been implemented by members :
The Sound Of Silence - DA StatementSo Eclipse is Coming
I'd like to organize a proactive event to show DA the possible results of a permanent Eclipse change-over. Instead of deactivating your accounts for good, or indefinitely boycotting the site, I'd like to make a Statement of Silence for those Users against Eclipse. Starting May 1st, I will not be active on Deviantart. I will not submit new deviations, journals or even visit the site for 3 Days time. From 12:00AM CST May 1st to 12:00am May 4th. (3 days) I ask all other Users who wish to keep old Deviantart to join me in this statement of silence.
Not Only Is Eclipse Difficult to Navigate, It is so close to Plagiarism it isnt funny. How they aren't in a Lawsuit with Artstation is beyond me!
Look at these site comparisons!

The Sound of Silence - Core Refund Tickets?Hello there!
Creator of #TheSoundofSilenceMovement here.
a fellow DA User noted me :iconrandomchiz: with another intriguing idea.
That users send in support tickets asking for refunds on their Core. Now I know the majority of you will probably cut out core if you end up leaving indefinitely or even if you stay, since all them pretty perks are no longer available. And I highly doubt that DA will actually Refund anyone. However perhaps the flood of refund requests might make a statement as to the loss of their revenue in that regard.
The double-edge of this blade however, is that they /may/ decide to refund us, and we will be cut off our core sooner even then the eclipse launch. I will leave it up to you guys whether you wish to proceed with this idea or not, but I do see the potential in it.
Also, I just want to thank every single one of you for your support in this movement. Follow me for updates and reminders!

Hi there!
Firstly, thank you so much for all of these helpful site suggestions! It was really reassuring to read a summary about each one, along with their pros and cons, as I wasn’t quite sure where to migrate just in case
I am someone who both enjoys art and loves to add lengthy descriptions to artworks (like character profile, general story of something, etc.)
I’ve seen that places like Twitter has limited word counts, which made me wonder if you happen to know a site that allows large text space for the artist’s description (like how it is here)? Thank you so much in advance, and I really appreciate your time and kindness!

for commenting in general? well, one weak point of tumblr is that no comment will show up on anything. it just get lost in the sea of notes.
newgrounds, while it allows lenghty comments (12 000 characters) has the weakpoint of only allowing one comment and one reply, by the author only.
i guess only furaffinity allows that kind of discussion

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful and helpful message too!
I do like to write lengthy comments, so your suggestions have certainly helped me on that, but I was more going along the lines of looking for sites that allows for expansive, unlimited description space to accompany an artwork (like how DeviantArt has an artist's description). I often write a lot of paragraphs to add more information about the contents of my art in addition to the art itself, so having a free and spacious artist's description is quite important to me

Oh it was my absolute true pleasure, tigeus, and I'm really glad if my words were able to reach you well! If anything, thank you so very much for answering my question with such thorough detail, as well as for your incredibly comforting kindness! I do want to first apologize for my delayed response though; I have been thinking a lot about the alternative places you've suggested based on my question, and wanted to think through before responding to you in the case that I might have a bit more questions.
Your message here has definitely helped me so incredibly much to alleviate the anxiousness that comes with trying to see what new places would work for me. I checked out Mastadon in particular, as that sounded something new to me and I am thankful to have been introduced to a new place to add to my list of places to go, and have also checked out Waterfall (though I wasn't quite sure when the site mentioned that it used "cookies". I'm kind of generally unclear with what cookies exactly are in computer terms, so I wasn't sure if cookies were ultimately a safe thing or not. If it's not too much, would it be okay for me to ask you if you can maybe clarify on what a cookie is? If not, I completely understand and I'm so sorry for even asking! )
The way you described "blogging sites" as description friendly was very easy to collectively understand as well, and the same goes for how you described Toyhou.se too! If I can add anything helpful from my part, I've recently discovered that there is this new art site in the works called "ArtSpacious"; I believe the hardworking and passionate people behind this project are making this site in a way that keeps the great features of DeviantArt (like customizations) and adding better things in addition to it ( you can learn more about it here in this journal -->
Are you freaking out about Eclipse? Check this outWe're all freaked out by Eclipse. Or, at least the majority of us are. This is our home, we have burrowed roots here that span over a decade for some, and we have amassed our watcherbase with painstaking effort! We've earned out badges and uploaded hundreds of our deviations and put so much effort into our groups! We've forged meaningful connections and found a network of friends here, a place of support and encouragement. But for some, Eclipse is a dealbreaker. It ruins dA. Yet, we need our community, we can't lose each other. Right?
This is not another rant journal or petition.
This is action. We are doing something about it.
So, we are making a new art site. It isn't as good as dA, it's better. It's hella better. We are talking about the features we've all dreamed of, what we've always asked for but never been heard by dA staff about. We're talking about everything we all want to keep, but so much more. There will be customiza and here in their group page ---> www.deviantart.com/artspacious )
If you already knew about this, I apologize for sharing something you've already known! If it was something new to you, then I hope I was able to provide something helpful too Thank you so much again for taking your time to answer my question, as well as for your wonderful friendliness that makes these confusing times so much clearer and hopeful

There is absolutely no need to apologize (certainly not to me, given my slowness here!) - I'm so glad you took the time to think on the suggestions; moreso, if you're still lost on those options, the list is constantly being amended with suggestions from people far more knowledgeable than myself! (:
And I'm SO glad to hear that you found my comment (rambling |D) to be of any use, that's all I could hope for! : D Though that is a fantastic question RE: cookies, and in my limited knowledge (and in Waterfall's instance), I can try to define them; A 'cookie' is a small file a site will store about the way that a user uses it. Most sites on the internet use this (and I'm sure DeviantArt is one of them), but for transparency, they need your consent (either in using the site and implying your consent, or by clicking an "I accept" button like in Waterfall's case). Using your browser, cookies can also be cleared the same way you'd clear your browsing history. This is a really simple definition, so I'd definitely recommend you check out Waterfall's comprehensive privacy page for more detail: waterfall.social/privacy.php
On another note, thank you so much for directing my attention to ArtSpacious! It has since been included in the watch-this-space section of the list. It's so exciting to see platforms like these in the works, and I'm certain I'm not the only one keenly following their development!
But it's absolutely no worries at all; thank you again for being so polite, patient, and for asking! ;_; If there's anything I can clarify or further help with, don't hesitate to ask.

Reading your message gives me a sense of hope and love that keeps me so warm for days and days on end I have been caught up with some things as of late, but I often think about your compassionate words a lot, and am just so thankful for them beyond words. And though this whole Eclipse experience has certainly shifted me into new things for me, like exploring other platforms, your gentle guidance is something I am so honored and eternally grateful to have come across -- and it's kindness like yours that really cements the life treasure that there will always be someone compassionate who is willing to help you. Your consistently amended lists of options, with some wonderful suggestions from others, is such a savior and is hugely, hugely appreciated Your dedicated passion to help others have not only saved me, but have inspired me so much to do so for others too. Whenever there is a time where I can help someone during this time, I am instantly taken back to our conversations, and how your friendliness has provided such comforting encouragement towards more self-discovery
So truly, your comment is not a rambling at all! I find it all to be very soothing and nourishing; and seeing how you explain everything so well in detail and in such a patient manner, you make the entire learning process for me feel very natural, loved, and well-understood. That means everything to someone who needs a bit more help, like I do, and I really want to thank every bit of time you spent to help me along the way. I was quite surprised that DA is one of the sites that uses cookies, and despite its cute and yummy name, I've always somehow thought they were of something to be avoided if possible (mainly because I didn't know much about them). And thank you so much for the link to Waterfall's details on comprehensive privacy, as well! It's another step like that (provided links) that really helps me so much, as well as truly shows the depth of your willingness to help others. Because it's more professionally into detail, there were a lot of things to read about it, and I generally found your definition for cookies to be easier to understand as a whole.
Oh! Not a problem at all, and I'm sorry if, by the time I have mentioned it, it seemed redundant! It's good in the sense that I can help share/promote something that could help everyone, but I certainly didn't want to waste any more of your time if you've already had it covered I wish so much luck for their amazing development too, as well as am rooting for the well-being of everyone's creative expressiveness
Awww, tigeus, I should be the one thanking you so very much for being so incredibly patient with me! -- For gently taking me through step by step with your wise knowledge and warm friendliness. I was just so lost with everything and on where to go, and then I came across your page -- one of the best things to have happened. I'll always remember all of your help and how you've made me feel so welcomed in every way. And my goodness, thank you so, so much for the watch too! I am at a loss of words from how honored I am to be blessed with something so amazing from someone so truly kind as you! As I look at other options while trying to adapt to Eclipse as best as I can, I hope my art can bring some color and light to your days I truly hope that I don't bother you overall, but your kindness has made me feel comfortable and at home to be able to ask you further questions, if I may have any
Thank you so, so, so very much again for all of your love, generosity, and help; this current experience is and has been a huge change for me, but you've made so many flowers grow between the stepping stones towards a better future
