Description 銀閣寺、京都、日本
Ginkaku temple, Kyoto, Japan.

This is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto, but as it was being refurbished when I first arrived in Japan, I had never been there until recently.

Commissioned by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, it was orignially intended to be covered in silver, emulating Kinkaku-ji (golden-pavilion temple) that was commissioned by Yoshimasa’s grandfather.

Unfortunately that work could not be completed before Yoshimasa’s death, so the temple remains in its unfinished state to this day. Because of this it is often cited as an example of the Japanese aesthetic of “wabi-sabi” (beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”).

I like the tranquility, the gentleness and the skill behind it. Thanks.

As always, I am astounded by the gardens in Japan. The range of color in the foliage and the way it is planted is so beautiful it is surreal. I live in the Western US and it is very dry here - our main colors are brown and tan - not very pretty. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photography.

Great shot Tim. When we went a few weeks ago, the colors weren't at peak.

The week before I had to go to Tokyo on business and the week after I had to take the JLPT, so this was the only weekend I was able to get out. Pretty lucky!

Usually the peak would have been earlier and your timing would have been perfect. The summer was longer this year and the autumn warmer.

Yeh, I was really wanted to get the peak but I think I did fine. Shot in Aperture priority but in hindsight, I should have stuck with manual which would have probably produced better shots.

Oh well, so much for trying something new. live and learn.

So this is what it looks like? Haha. I got lost when I tried going there.

I like the spot you shot from. The kouyou is very nice.

It kinda far huh? I walked from Nanzenji, which takes about 30 minutes. If you ever go again, then I recommend that route.

I liked this angle because the trees hide the crowds of people
