Description A fan of my sprite series Mario and Luigi: The Mask asked me if Green Thunder (Masked Luigi) was Mr. L or would become more like Mr. L at some point. The answer is no, and this is why, because I see Mr. L as the Ego of Luigi's mind and Green Thunder as the ID.

First I'll explain what the picture on the left shows, it's Luigi's Super Ego, Ego and ID. As depicted by a Super power Luigi, Mr. L. and an un-green Green Thunder. These are thought processes at goes through all our heads and result in decision making and our basic thoughts.

The ID deals with the base desires to eat, survive and procreate. The Ego deals with translating those feelings into real world desires and the Super Ego is the moral compass that guides both of them.

So if the ID decides, "I'm hungry I want something to eat." It could do something stupid like eat the furniture as its near, but the Ego would say, "no that might harm me, lets get a sandwich" but how does he get that sandwich? Does he steal it, make one or buy one? That final decision is made by the Super Ego which depending on the person decides what action to take to quench the need Β first posed by the ID.

In the case of Luigi I'd say he has a powerful Super Ego and probably an over active one at that. This is what makes him naive and less than enthusiastic sometimes to get involved in an adventure. So remove the Super Ego (the moral compass) and you have Mr. L, someone who doesn't seem to care about right and wrong but still has sufficient personality to be a gentleman thief, plus you can tell Mr. L drips with Ego from is appearance in Super Paper Mario.

Green Thunder is obviously the ID, a part of Luigi's mind that is constantly shackled by the Ego and Super Ego, a creature that is unbelievably selfish, crazed and easy to anger if you cross him. Green Thunder is Luigi's basic instincts given arms and legs and a voice to interact with the world.

So obviously when Luigi puts the Mask on, the Super Ego and Ego are pushed aside and locked away allowing the ID to have free reign of the entire mind which is what the right picture shows.

This is also a break down of how the Mask works when it influences a persons mind while they're wearing it. It doesn't just turn them into a super powered, whacky cartoon person wanting to have a good time. It depends on which person wears the Mask but a wearer is more likely to become crazed, deranged, monsters of chaos who has no regard for the consequences of their actions, rather than the whacky creators of mischief we normally associate with the Mask.

So Super Luigi is the Super Ego, Mr. L is the Ego, and Green Thunder is the ID.

That was very interresting !

Never knew about the Ego part. Sure Mr.L was obvious but I never thought of the "Super" one xD

But then it'll mean that when Mr.L was "created", the Ego part was given a "body" of some sort... A image of his part.Β

For me,it was more the "Ying Yang"/"Soul" theory for me. Before Luigi was brainwashed, his "counterpart" was locked in his inconscious, then when Mr.L come along : Nastasia created a "Soul" for Mr.L to exist and used Luigi's body as a vessel or something to (as you say) interract with the world then after Super Papier Mario ended, Mr.L went back to his "Soul" form and was put into "Coma".

Luigi is sure a complicated man xD

It's more that Mr. L lacks the moral compass and social inhibitions granted by the Super Ego, so Mr. L is all Ego and ID, but peel away the Ego from Mr. L and you get Green Thunder, so when Mr. L says "I am the Green Thunder" he's technically right. lol

Interesting theory, so Mr. L technically isn't Luigi at all then, just a spirit that inhabits his body.

I reckon from a psychological standpoint I have him sussed (figured out) I'm going to incorporate my analysis of him in a later episode

What's interesting is that it takes 7 minutes for a thought from the ID portion of the brain to surface via the Super Ego.

(For those abdicating that this means we have no free will and are just unknowing puppets to our subconscious keep in mind you can choose to ignore the commands/thoughts of the ID )
