Description It had to be done. As a Doctor Who fan, I was planning on making a TARDIS derby car for the adult races this year, until my son heard about it. Then he decided HE wanted a TARDIS car. So, we worked on it together.

She didn't win, but she did make the finals. Both son and daughter won place ribbons, so it was a successful day. The dad's at the Pinewood Derby loved it and I got many a compliment from them, but the best part was hearing the scouts cheering "Doctor WHO!, Doctor WHO!" as the cars were released.

Β Just watch the weight and dimensions. Β I added balsa to build up the proportions, not realizing that I couldn't make it wider. Β She fit on the track, but I was almost disqualified. Β I also had to hollow out the pine a bit to remove the extra weight I added with the balsa. Β

We had a blast with it and it's still sitting in my son's room.

Thanks!! We had a blast making it, and the other adults loved it. LOL. I can't believe it ran as well as it did too.

Ahh, how the times have changed since I was a boy scout. I remember I had a streamlined car of original design, smooth, lightning bolt pinstripes, and metal plates at the bottom so the wheels wouldn't fall out. And not a single time did I see anything creative of this merit, and I'd like to state that I am truly impressed.

Despite being a fan creation -- having something in common with your child is very important to learn if I want to be a father in the next few years after college. You not only chopped that block down flat, but you added a cute light at the top and shaped it totally different than a typical car-body. I don't know if this a new trend in deviating from the the typical derby car, but I can tell how many more kids are in touch with things that aren't considered so "geeky" anymore.

I really like how accurate it is and I'm glad you and your son could bond over such a cute project.

There are still plenty of people that do the traditional cars. We've done them, my daughter was very proud to do her own this year. Sometimes, it's just fun to do something different. There are usually a few really creative cars that the dads help out with. Last year, one was made to look like a Swiss Army knife, complete with moving blades! We've seen hot dogs, whales, the Geico stack of bills and they are always fun to watch. They don't ever win the Derby, but they are fun to build.

I almost got us disqualified by building it wider - the wheels put us just over the max width. Fortunately it didn't interfere with the other racers so they let us run. The inside of the block is almost completely hollowed out though so we could build it and still make weight.

That makes sense with the building method. And wow, again, nothing happened like that when I was younger. The more interesting ones are fun to build -- and that Swiss Army one sounds awesome.

Go for it! It was a fun and pretty easy build all things considered.
