Description

Hands down...on the butt...uh huh...me thinks! I mean hands down, the Dungeons & Dragons animated series was probably my favorite cartoon on Saturday mornings growing up.

I had gotten the basic and expert boxed sets in 1981, when they came out. I was 8 years old, so I couldn't really understand the game yet, but I knew I loved it!  When the LJN action figures were released, I started collecting those. When this cartoon first aired in 1983, my 10 year old mind was blown! This was the fall just after Return of the Jedi came out, which was one of the best summers of my childhood. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe started airing just a week or two before this show. So now, I was balls deep in fantasy, and couldn't wait for the weekends.

Obviously, my "attention" wasn't yet on the girls, because I hadn't hit puberty yet. For years this show was impossible to see unless you taped it back then, which I did not. My dad didn't get a VCR until 1985. Thank god for the internet though, because I found them on AVI files a few years ago and could finally go back and watch them. Unfortunately, I didn't get the DVD set when it came out and I'm not paying collectors prices for it.

Sheila caught my male gaze of course; however, the old man creeper in me can appreciate Diana a little more, so she's become my favorite.  I will be featuring her acrobatic backside in a piece as well soon, so make sure to look out of that one.

I agree 100% the biggest reason was the producers and creators of this show were willing to take chances. They new some of the content was pretty heavy for a young audience, but did it anyway. They farmed the animation out to the Japanese studios who knew how to do it. There was humor, but didn't really on snarky meta-humor to get laughs.

They do but society has changed too much for that.

Cartoons on TV will never be the same again.

That's why the best things to watch now are the straight to DVD ones like from the DC Universe or anime.

Plenty of legs and scantily clad heroines in anime.

That's funny! I actually did see this. Anime to this day doesn't disappoint and they seem to actually draw a sexy butt these days, but they don't really count. Fan Service has always been a thing with anime. I know most of the American productions in the 80s were outsourced to Japanese studios, which is why little fan service things slip through, i.e. Sheila's panty flash in D&D, but now days with everything going to the Cal Arts style of Flash Animation, like Steven Universe and Gravity Falls, there is not only no fan service, but the style in and of itself is unappealing and lazy.

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-18 00:02:15 +0000 UTC]

You hit it right on the mark for me.

I'm so disappointed in American cartoons these days that I can only watch for humor like Teen Titans Go! which I kind of stopped watching as soon as I cut cable.

I watch as much anime as I can and definitely a plus when there is fan service with nice butts drawn.

But, I don't feel the same if it's just schoolgirls flashing panties.

I do need the special superheroine or fighting heroine with a nice tight costume to have the same affect as those characters from the 80s.

That's why I'm still wishing for an anime reboot of some of the old American cartoons.

But, there are also really nicely themed anime that doesn't have a heroine aspect to it like "Keijo!!!" which is basically a butt-fighting sport anime.

Or 6 years ago, "Sekai De Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!" (I Want to be the Strongest in the World!) anime about women's wrestling.

You definitely know your stuff! Especially how cartoons in 80s were outsourced to Japan like G.I. Joe.

I can only imagine if G.I. Joe was rebooted in anime style.

Some of the Marvel anime were pretty good and had some nice butt shots.

Oh Don't get me started on Teen Titans Go! My son like it's and that's fine, but I cringe when I watch it. Personally, I can't stand modern anime. There are a few shows here and there I like, but overall, I think it's boring, stupid and formulaic. The golden age, which is when I started watching it back with Robotech here in the states in 1985 was the only stuff I really like. Dirty Pair is my favorite! I've seen the Keijo show. You would think that it pushes all my buttons and came forth straight from my ID, but I really didn't like it. It was OK. Girls slamming there asses together sounds good on paper, but the show, for me failed to interest me. Now if a show like GI JOE or He-Man had girls slamming their asses together, then I can get on board.

Thanks for the praise! I know my stuff up to a point. I watch a lot of documentaries and read a lot of articles. Most of my knowledge comes from that. I assume most of the information is reliable. They did do a GI JOE anime a few years back. the name escapes me at the moment, but it was pretty good.

Oh yeah, I have the internet!

Gi Joe: Resolute

Thank you YouTube.

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-18 15:56:10 +0000 UTC]

I guess we're on the same page on American cartoons but not so much on modern anime.

I still love anime and I find it wildly entertaining.

Because it's not always about sexy butts and costumes but humor, action, and good stories or fun moments after a great build up.

I won't argue too much about it being formulaic since some anime seems like a copy of another.

But there are always really fun new shows that stand out like "One Punch Man" or "Demon Slayers" that makes me crave more after each episode.

From suggesting "Keijo!!!" and after your response, I get a better idea of your preference.

As for G.I. Joe Resolute, I don't consider that anime even though they tried to make it look like it.

Not a single Japanese person was involved from what I read about.

It was good and saw when it premiered and I bought the DVD but not the same compared to my example of Marvel anime where Japanese were involved and even made Japanese language versions.

So, I'm still hoping for a G.I. Joe anime version in future or DC make some anime version while using traditional costumes.

Speaking of YouTube and the internet, at least it allows us to access a lot of the classics we love.

I remember seeking out and binge watching Bionic Six a few years back.

If only they made a remastered version or sold the original quality on DVD because some of the episode quality was kind of bad.

As for upcoming anime/cartoons, I'm looking forward to "Wonder Woman: Bloodlines" and "My Hero Academy" next month.

I still haven't seen "Batman Hush" which I'll probably watch this week.

One modernish anime I got onto was Space Dandy. It wasn't great, but I enjoyed it. I'll have to check out some more new stuff, but like I said, not a lot grabs my attention. I couldn't get into one-punch man.

I did not know GI Joe Resolute was an American production. It looked Japanese, but I only saw it the one time when it came out a few years ago.

I never watched Bionic Six back in the day, but have seen a few episodes here and there. It looks good.

I have not seen Hush yet either. Honestly, I'm Batmanned out!

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-18 19:04:44 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I thought Space Dandy was good. You don't have to downplay it.

It was funny, had some good action scenes, and loved Honey's costume and hair.

And rare to see anime throw in a psychedelic episodes since their society is mainly drug free.

Yeah, G.I. Joe was done by Titmouse Animation. Not sure if it was outsourced.

But, if you look up Marvel X-Men Anime, Wolverine Anime, and Iron Man Anime (didn't watch Blade) then you'll see they were all directed, written, and produced by Japanese people.

Not saying they were great because looks too different or too much changes but this conversation started off with nicely drawn butts and fan service which it has like Jean Grey's butt in the beginning of ep 1 and a nice butt shot in a bondage scene for Yukio in Wolverine.

I mentioned Bionic Six because that was an 80s cartoon that was outsourced to Japan like G.I. Joe Sunbow and Transformers.

I know what you mean by feeling sick of Batman and just not liking DC Universe Animated Originals as much since Bruce Timm stepped out as a producer.

And still don't really like Jay Oliva as a director after so much changes made to character design and new voice actors.

I was excited and happy when Bruce Timm came back as an executive producer for Justice League Vs. the Fatal Five.

I was so happy seeing Wonder Woman from Justice League again!

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-18 22:06:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's why they changed character designs for "Justice League: War" and made Wonder Woman's costume look more like Psylocke's classic costume that's like a mock turtle neck leotard.

Which I still don't mind and grown to like and way better than a Xena skirt for a traditionalist like me.

Even new voice actors rather than the ones from JL and JLU just makes things a little off for me.

TimPhillips In reply to WonderSlave [2019-09-18 22:51:07 +0000 UTC]

I've always liked the voice actress in the JL and JLU. And I hate the Xena costume with a passion! I like starred bloomers of the original. I'm sick of people who are ashamed of the source material because it is either to sexy or they want to make it realistic. It's a goddam comic book and a cartoon! I wish people would get their head out of there ass and quit smelling their own farts and stay on-model to the original.

I know, right?

It's like you read my mind.

I stopped buying Wonder Woman comics since the Xena skirt.

And now a full circle as to why cartoons these days suck and will never be the same.

TimPhillips In reply to WonderSlave [2019-09-19 10:11:00 +0000 UTC]

That is why DC comics and Marvel are on life-support. Now is the time for us, the fans turned creators to pick up the torch and make the stuff people really want to see and read. We have inherited the earth as it were.

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-19 22:44:50 +0000 UTC]

At least their movies are making money and kind of skeptical about "Wonder Woman 1984" especially after the delay and the preview of Wonder Woman's golden Aquaman looking armor outfit.

Ugh, so dumb how they keep trying to change things and trying to apply the "realistic" aspect to costumes.

Too many to list the dumb changes in past movies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimPhillips In reply to WonderSlave [2019-09-19 22:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Agreed! Let comic book characters look like comic characters. For that matter, I don't even see why they need to make live-action movies based on comic characters except to make money, which they do, so they will continue. Christopher reeves superman was fun, so was Linda Carter's show. Batman 1989 was great, but they should of stopped then. They made a live action Justice League in the early 90s and it sucked, so they should of took that as a sign. Don't do it!

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-19 23:20:21 +0000 UTC]

Lol.

G.I. Joe with Marlon Wayans.

Transformers with poo poo robots where you can't tell if it's their face, shoulder, or ass.

And can't tell if they are good guys or bad guys unless it's painted red and blue.

A Batman that looks like Ben Affleck. (2nd worst for me after Clooney.)

Spider-Man is starting to look more like a Power Ranger with the black outlines.

Etc, etc, too many to list.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimPhillips In reply to WonderSlave [2019-09-19 23:49:59 +0000 UTC]

They need to just stick to animated shows that honor the source material. Comics are an artistic medium. The art, the color and the outragous costumes is what sells it. Unless you stick to that when you do live action, your just making some action movie with comic characters names. I think hugh jackman is a great actor and he did a good job, but wolverine is very short and says bub a lot. The 90s animated show got him spot on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WonderSlave In reply to TimPhillips [2019-09-20 00:18:36 +0000 UTC]

Lol! I was thinking about Hugh Jackman when making the list of changed characters.

Good actor and look but too tall and not enough attitude.

Even Spider-Man doesn't make enough punny jokes.

Superman is too serious and evil.

Batman is ready to kill Superman because he's an alien that could be a threat. Really?!?

And he decides not to kill because adopted mother is same name as his real mother's name.

Ugh, even writing is dumb when you stop to think about it for a moment.

Wonder Woman's naive to man's world but she should have enough ethics and common sense that's supposed to be wise as Athena not to be carrying a sword and shield around in their hands.

Really?!? Even Amazons don't just carry a sword in their hands, it's sheathed or put away!!!!!!!!!! DUMB!!!!!
