to ask a stupid question, how does a villain have a dark version, they are already dark.

Whatever redemption possibility she had is snuffed out when my villain makes a deal with her. She gets revenge..but then serves him. Hence the chest gem. Its embedded in her and allows him a great degree of control over her.
