The Protector-class Heavy Cruiser was designed by the orbital shipyards above the planet of Satooine in 25 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin). The ship was than demonstrated before several representatives from the Galactic Remnant which were impressed by the ship's performances. The ship was than placed into mass production in 30 ABY, but due to New Republics restrictions upon the former Imperial Remnant faction, the Galactic Remnant was limited to only 192 production models, three ships per habited planet within the Galactic Remnant's borders (the Galactic Remnant is composed of a total of 64 inhabited planets spread across 8 systems). Though many in the Galactic Remnant were angered by the restrictions, many saw it as just another means for the New Republic to control them, the Galactic Remnant high command made it work, something made easy by the purpose in which the Protector-class was designed around.
Designed with the pure purpose to protect planets within the Galactic Remnant, the Protector-class Heavy Cruiser wasn't a particularly fast ship with it's sublight speed being just good enough to help move the ship from one position to another, and it's hyperdrive was only good enough to get it to the nearest star system. However, where the ship lacked in speed, the ship made up in firepower, protection, and agility. The ship was protected by armor, and shielding normally found on ships three times as large, if not greater, and it was armed with a super heavy anti-capital ship cannon that ran along the entire first half of the ship. All though it was armed with a cannon capable of destroying small dreadnoughts with a mere handful of shots, the most impressive feature was the ship's state of the art gyroscopic systems. These gyroscopic systems granted the ship an insane level of agility, allowing the ship to pivot, and turn while in place. This helped the ship keep its fixed in place, capital ship killing, super gun pointed at even the smallest, and fastest hostile vessel. All of these features made the Protector-class Heavy Cruiser ideal for defending large, and stationary targets, such as planets, but very poor for conducting offensive campaigns. It was for this reason that the New Republic even allowed the Galactic Remnant to produce such a vessel. As long as it was for a defensive purpose, the New Republic would allow it, for a time.
However, all worries about the New Republic was washed away when in 34 ABY, the First Order revealed its true strength, and attacked the Galaxy in a single swift strike, a strike that was launched by the firing of the First Order's System killing super weapon, dubbed "Starkiller Base". In its first opening shot, the First Order destroyed the current capital of the New Republic along with a large portion of its naval forces. This left the Galactic Remnant as one of the last sovereign factions within the Galaxy still strong enough to stand against the First Order, but the true goal of the First Order was still unknown. After this attack, the Galactic Remnant went to battle stations, and placed its entire military on high alert. Defensive lines were drawn, personal put in place, assets secured, and all they had to do was wait for the First Order's next move. Would they attempt an invasion, or id the First Order have something else in mind?
