The Insectator-class Star Destroyer was a model of star destroyer built from the salvaged parts of old Galactic Empire warships. The ship was mainly built out of the Fondor shipyards though some were built out of other facilities. The warship was built for the New Republic's "Imperial Hunters" task force. It was the largest purpose built warship for the task force with only repurposed Imperial-class Star Destroyer being bigger.
Crewed only by former Imperial POWs seeking to shorten their sentences by serving in this task force. The only New Republic crew members was the Officers, and security droids placed onto the ship incase of a mutiny. Surprisingly to New Republic officials watching this Task Force (mainly so they can watch it fail) most Imperial POWs gladly took up the job of hunting down rogue Imperial Warlords and Imperial Remnant Factions. In fact, around 1/3 of those who completed their sentence stayed with the task force with many staying on to "finish the fight". Many of the POWs saw serving in the Task Force and aboard the Insectator-class, as a mean to rectify their errors when they served under the Empire.
Unlike many other New Republic warships, particularly those built after the Galactic Concordance of 5 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), the Insectator-class Star Destroyer was very well armed and protected making it more than a match for Imperial warships such as the Victory-class Star Destroyer. Also, unlike other New Republic warships built from salvaged Imperial hardware, the Insectator-class bared strong resemblance to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, though it's hull design was more in line with the Secutor-class Star destroyer. This design choice was on purpose as the New Republic wanted Imperial Remnant personal to know that it wasn't New Republic soldiers killing them, but their own.
Unsurprisingly, due to the limited need of the warship, as well as more political reasons, few Insectator-class Star Destroyer were built. All that were built were used by the "Imperial Hunters" Task Force though most were scrapped by 29 ABY.
