The Predator-class Star Destroyer, or sometimes referred to as the Predator-class Carrier, was a class of capital ship used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. While its direct comparer being was the more popular Venator-class Star Destroyer , the Predator-class differed from the Venator-class in several ways. First off, the Predator-class was intended to operate more in ship to ship combat, boasting stronger armor, and shielding than the Venator-class. Secondly, the ship wasn't planned to be used to land any ground troops, only conduct missions in space. The designers felt that planetary assault was better left to purpose built warships such as the Acclimator-class Assault Ship. This was reflected in the ship's standard loadout not possessing any ground vehicles, or landing shuttles. In fact, the only time shuttles, or any kind of landing craft was ever kept on these ships was when the mission demanded it.
Thirdly, and more noticeably, the Predator-class differed from the Venator-class physically. While both vessels had large hangers that took up much of the ship's interior, the Predator-class's hanger ran from starboard to portside, unlike the Venator's hanger than followed the ship's keel line. This layout of the hanger (not to different than the main hanger found on the Separatist's Providence-class) granted the hangers themselves better protected, and did more in shielding space crafts as they landed or disembarked from the ship. This also go rid of the greatest weakness found on the Venator-class, the large hanger doors that slid open and closed to belch out swarms of space crafts. This granted the Predator-class a better structural integrity, and did not open the ship to the possibility of a boarding action when launching or retrieving its complement. However, in the end the Predator-class wasn't as successful as the Venator-class, mainly due to the fact the Venator-class came first, and no one wanted to delay new capital ships getting to the front lines that switching mass production from the Venator-class to the Predator-class. This resulted in only a few Predator-class Star Destroyers being built.
By the end of the Clone Wars, and the ascension of the Galactic Empire, the Predator-class was dusted off, and evaluated once more, but it didn't fit the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Doctrine it was so keen to introduce to its star fleet. Never the less, many more Predator-class Star Destroyers stayed in service when compared tot he Venator-class due to the fact it fit the Tarkin Doctrine better than the Venator-class, and it did well in escorting the larger Imperial-class.
