I hate Twilight as much as you, but going by the oldest known legends of what we'd today call vampires, they simply dislike the sun and burn easily. They also can't feed in the sun. It wasn't until the Bela Lugosi [i]Dracula[/i] movie that vampires were said to die by sunlight alone. They still don't effing sparkle, though.
And, despite my pointless, OCD fueled rant about your description, I actually quite like this.

Hell, even Heather Brewer knows enough to force her vamps to put on a lot of sunblock. Joss Whedon has houses with sewer access and Spike's blanket. I liked these books...but then I see everyone's opinions and go 'hang on. She DID ruin vampires'. I feel like she ruined romance, too, but that could just be me. I don't want to think I'd commit suicide becuz my true luv died. I'd go on for him, I hope.
