(So, I watched HP7 Part 2 last week. It was fun to watch it in the cinema because most people were either book fans or watched every other HP films (or both), and everyone was laughing and "Aww"'ing at the wrong places. Just to let you know.)
I can understand why almost every Sherlockwarts fanart portrayed Sherlock and Watson in different houses. They're just so different. But if you look at best friends in Harry Potter, they mostly belong to the same house. If Sherlock and Watson in HP universe are in different houses, how are they going to spend time together? And how are they going to share a flat?
So, remember little Harry: "Not Slytherin...not Slytherin..."
(It was a pain choosing a right house for both of them...I thought Gryffindor may be the most...appropriate.)

I just don't think sherlock would be happy in gryffindor, they wouldnt be smart enough for him, Ravenc.aw and slytherin would be dumb to him too but less soΒ

Plot hole: The children are sorted in alphabetical order Holmes Sherlock was sorted before Watson John. John being a strong and brave harted kid is sorted in Griffindor before he can make a choice.

I think the whole reason for putting them in different houses is because they're very different that they'd be best friends despite being in different houses. This is partly why I like Sherlock in Slytherin and John in Gryffindor, not only does it fit their personalities but Slytherin and GryffindorΒ are generally enemies/rivals but Sherlock and John form a forbidden friendship, which isn't that different than their relationship in the show. Plus, Slytherin is often seen as evil even though they aren't and Sherlock is often hated and seen as evil even though he's not but John sees through that.

It's always been my headcanon that Sherlock would go out of his way to avoid being put in the same House as Mycroft, just to spite him. He's totally Sirius about it.Β
(So where he'd end up kind of depends on which house you put Mycroft in! o_O)Β

But technically, Sherlock would have gone before John because the list is read out alphabetically. So it would be John putting himself into whatever house that Sherlock ended up in. Or it was decided between them before hand that they both want to be Gryffindor, so yeah, but whatever, this is adorable all the same.
