Description
"'...The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account.''Really?'
'It did for me,' said Harry."
--J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
(So, I watched HP7 Part 2 last week. It was fun to watch it in the cinema because most people were either book fans or watched every other HP films (or both), and everyone was laughing and "Aww"'ing at the wrong places. Just to let you know.)
I can understand why almost every Sherlockwarts fanart portrayed Sherlock and Watson in different houses. They're just so different. But if you look at best friends in Harry Potter, they mostly belong to the same house. If Sherlock and Watson in HP universe are in different houses, how are they going to spend time together? And how are they going to share a flat?
So, remember little Harry: "Not Slytherin...not Slytherin..."
(It was a pain choosing a right house for both of them...I thought Gryffindor may be the most...appropriate.)

OMG MY POOR LITTLE MYCROFT you're awesome for drawing this. even though I'm a hardcore Slytherin and therefore I have a.. problem.. with seeing my favourite character in Gryffindor. but I can put it aside. because this drawing is above all that.

Well, Slytherin and Gryffindor aren't necessarily rivals all the time but thank you ^^

Of course, since the students are actually sorted alphabetically by last name, Sherlock would be sorted before John.
And how would they spend time together? Well, when you're Sherlock Holmes, it's not like something as easily-guessed as a password is going to keep you out of the other houses' common rooms.
Also, Ginny and Luna were best friends despite being in different houses.
But, yes, if they were both going to be in the same house, it would have to be Gryffindor, for the whole laughing-in-the-face-of-danger-as-I-jump-off-a-cliff-thing (I think they usually call it "bravery" or "courage" or some such nonsense).

Yeah...I realized the last name thing bug. *facepalm*
I guess different houses would work too, and yes, you're right about the Gryffindor-suit-both theory ^^

Poor big bro, Sherlock always was rebellious XD
You gotta love how vague the hat sorting is. I put you in the house that fits your attributes...or if you desire to have attributes related to a certain house, or if you'll develop attributes that belong that house. and everyone's favourite! If you REALLY want to go somewhere else, that's cool too...why not just get rid of the middle man and just ask the KIDS what house they want!!!!

I like this SO much... I've been trying to find examples of either Gryffindor!Sherlock or Slytherin!John EVERYWHERE. And this fits, because really, no matter where he goes, Sherlock is going to end up alienating everyone but John and (possibly Lestrade, where ever he is in this AU). Might as well be Gryffindor. *G*

I dunno really, I'd just like to see someone try to make it happen in a semi-plausible (prefferably non-cracky) way. Though, a lot of people theorize that his homelife wasn't great (what with Harry being an alchoholic)and typically people who grow up with less than stellar home lives learn to cope in ways that make good Slytherins.....
Or, since Sherlock technicly would have been sorted BEFORE John, maybe a reverse of your comic??? *G*

Here's a way it could work:
They meet on the train (or maybe in Diagon Ally, to give them a bit more time together?)and they do their instant!BFF 'possibly-more-once-they're old-enough' connection thing! So when Sherlock goes into Slytherin, this is what happens when it's John's turn.
Hat: "Oh, a fine mind, but such a brave and loyal heart. Almost certainy Hufflepuff, or possibly Gryff-"
John: "Slytherin, please."
Hat: *beat* Er, ah, I really don't think-"
John: "Sorry to be a bother, but I really must insist."
Hat: "Oh, but surely you-"
John: *Voice goes all wee!BAMF* I REALLY must insist. Now.
Hat:....-_-; "Very well... SLYTHERIN!"
Whatcha think? Sound workable?*G*

No 'But'."

Oh and about Sherlock being so clever - Hermoine was in Gryffindor even though she was. And the Sorting Hat thought about putting her to Ravenclaw too, she mentiones it in book 5 to DA when she came up with the Galleons changing stuff.

Yeah Hermione was a really good example. The sorting hat isn't that strict, I guess.

No free choice is something he always considers - and well our free choice is something that really shows who we are, so I think the sorting hat is very wise about that

This would totally happen if they knew each other b4 the sorting like with Ron and Harry! Also, Sherlock would probably just do that to hurt Mycroft!lol

That makes sense. Albus did have ambition when he was younger. And his gay lover. I mean his best friend didn't help with that in a positive way.
