Description Some leftover doodles from when I was practicing drawing Knuckle Joe and his Spiky Needle Monster form for the screenshot redraws.
I was wondering if there were any side effects to being turned into a monster, and it ended with me considering the possibility of KJ growing spikes when he’s emotionally distressed enough, if not turn completely into his monster form if he’s more than a little overwhelmed.
That of course can’t be very easy to manage, specially for his friends.
How do you comfort someone who's a literal ball of spikes without getting hurt? Specially when they are as temperamental as KJ...

Always happy to see a fan of KJ. Been also thinking about Joe's spiky monster form himself, such an underatted and cool design

He's a fun character with a nice story arc.
Wish we'd gotten more of him in the anime.

Oh I'm one of those people who thought that KJ  as well as Silica should've been permanent characters after their arcs. KJ would make a decent secondary to Kirby in the more combat sense.  A "battle buddy" type role.

Same really, and like, KJ and Silica should have stayed because damn...They've probably been fighting for so long that I doubt they've had time to be kids.
If they'd stayed Kirby would have actually encouraged them to relax a bit, being an example of how a young warrior can take it easy while still being a complete powerhouse.

Your ideas are incredibly valid and would make some good sense if applied in the story.

I got me doing on a story about KJ in the works now

Poor baby I've always wondered this myself.

It's an idea with potential.
It sure would mean KJ would have to make an effort to reign in some of his aggression.

I like you ideas! However, with Knuckle Joe's transformation into a monster leaves a lot of questions about Jecra and even the rest of the star warriors. Was Jecra a monster? Are all star warriors monsters? What might be going on?

It's a good question, but I think Nightmare had different plans for Jecra and Knuckle Joe, which explains why Jecra himself doesn't look like a monster.

Jecra was taken over during the peak of the war, when Meta Knight and Jecra were pushing back enemy lines because they were very competent warriors.
Getting either of them out of the picture was a priority, Jecra just happened to be the one who got captured.
Knowing Jecra's competences, it couldn't be too farfetched to say he'd escape from enemy clutches, so taking control of him and having him attack his squadron by surprise would have been a devastating hit against the GSA.
Jecra doesn't get a moster form because he's already strong enough not to need one, but most of him was twisted into something evil (with a very small part of him fighting on because he loved his son so very much).

Knuckle Joe is a different story altogether. He's been fighting since he was a kid because he wanted to avenge his father after hearing rumours that a Star Warrior killed him (rumours that were no doubt started by Nightmare's forces since the GSA wouldn't talk too much on the matter considering Meta Knight wouldn't strike down one of their own without good reason, and it's safe to assume he and Jecra were very close friends, so it couldn't have come out of the blue like Yamikage's betrayal).
Because KJ is a kid, he's more easily influenced, and his temper doesn't help.
He's a very aggressive kid.
Nightmare could have very easily been influencing him from the start, because he knew Jecra was strong, so his son would also be a formidable foe.
Why make an enemy out of the kid if he could use him?
But, again, because KJ is a kid, Nightmare would have a plan B in case he wasn't strong enough to deal with threats, hence the monster form.

I'm still not too sure of who is and who isn't a monster when it comes to Star Warriors, but I can at least see that even if they were at some point part of the monster army, they realized what Nightmare was doing was wrong and broke free.
