Description
The Savannah Kingdom belongs to !As for the creatures, they are all some variety of African cryptids. However...
Many thanks to for helping me come up with these LOVELY designs! These would look far less interesting without his assistance. XD
---------------------------------------------------------------
The Auli is a small sirenian which inhabits shallow river banks and densely forested/grassy areas. It uses its smaller size to its advantage in order to forage in places that much larger predatory animals find inaccessible.
FACTS:
- They have few natural defenses against predators. Yet despite this, their only frequent predator is the Jago-nini, because they tend to live in spaces where no predator can reach them.
- When the Jago-nini populations dropped, the Auli's populations rose. So much so that they had begun squatting in Gnollish villages when the local jungles became too overcrowded. The Gnolls, as a result, had to use them as livestock, to control their numbers.
- They are so called "River Sheep" because they make a very similar bleating sound to sheeps. Coincidentially, the Gnolls also herd them like sheep. However, their meat apparently tastes similar to beef, albeit fattier.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The Jago-nini is a highly derived predatory sauropod, which is much smaller than its cousins, yet it has grown accustomed to preying on the Savannah Kingdom's various species of manatee.
FACTS:
- They reside in similarly small spaces to the Auli. They are quite skilled in pursuing prey through heavily forested areas, albeit they cannot compete well against the Savannah Kingdom's other large predators.
- They frequently hunt not only Auli. But people as well, including Gnolls, Elves, and Humans. Not due to having an inherent hunger for humanoid flesh, but rather because they can successfully most species of humanoid.
- As a result, they were often trapped and killed by Gnolls. Exacerbating their decline in numbers was the Elvish Empire, whose hunting of them had rendered the species critically endangered. However, thanks to the rise in Auli numbers, their population has made a comeback.
====================================
The Ndoko na maiji, aka the Water Elephant is a species of semiaquatic elephant that uses its heavy weight to graze along the bottom of rivers and lakes, and has many similar traits and behaviors to hippos.
FACTS:
- They were named "kijanensis" because they were thought to be native to the Kijani Oasis. They're actually from the Ikooko River, because the Oasis was originally an arid grassland until the Gnolls used magic to create rivers and Baobab forests. This has greatly expanded their distribution.
- They are nocturnal, preferring to forage in the dark, to avoid competition with other large diurnal herbivores and carnivores. During the day, they sleep together as a herd on the water's surface.
- Unlike hippos, they often do not intentionally harm people. However, they have been occasionally known to accidentally knock over boats and canoes, causing passengers to fall into water filled with predatory animals. Because of this, going boating at night with an insufficiently sturdy boat is not recommended.
====================================
The Mourou-ngou is one of various saber-toothed "Water Lion", whose long, serrated teeth allow them to puncture thick hides, allowing them to prey on animals such as water elephants and hippos.
FACTS:
- It is nocturnal, meaning that among its most frequent prey items is the Water Elephant. However, to avoid being trampled, they seek out a weaker member of the herd, and make a bite, and then back off and wait for blood loss to finish its prey off.
- Mourou-ngou do not hunt in packs, but rather in pairs. They always mate for life, and from the moment they find a mate, they stay with them to hunt alongside them. They hunt with their cubs too, until they are old enough to find mates of their own.
- Mourou-ngou deal very poorly with solitude. Individuals who have lost their partners or cubs are sometimes known to get substitutes to fill in. I.e. other animal offspring, or a humanoid companion.
======================================
The Nzefu-Loi is a peculiar species of semiaquatic Indricothere, which exhibits various odd physical properties, yet is rarely seen due to its exceptionally shy demeanor.
FACTS:
- Their face is primarily dominated by a hugely long trunk. For the most part, said trunk is tightly compressed against its face, but when fully stretched out, it can reach 15 feet long. They use this to grab trees and fruits from higher branches. From there, they can use their tusks to crack fruits and coconuts.
- Their heads are pink because the rest of their body is largely submerged, but their heads stick so far out of the water that they secrete a reddish fluid similar to a hippo's "blood sweat". This not only moisturizes their head and neck skin, but also acts as an antibiotic. Their wrinkles help them keep it on for longer periods of time.
- They are related to rhinos, yet have much better vision than most of them. They keep their eyes lubricated with frequent and liberal use of tear ducts, making the animal appear to be constantly weeping. And hence, why various Gnoll villages tell myths about them, such as them being the ugly, unwanted child of a fertility god.
