Description Something a little different! Tipsy tries a Bestiary again! Although this time, using thinner lines, and grouping together beasts in the same taxonomic family! In this case...Monoceroses. Aka, Monocerotidae, aka Monos. A family of truly unique and diverse beasts all characterized by being related to the rhinoceros, and having a keratinous horn grow from their forehead!

Lemme know if I forgot to add any worthwhile specimens! I may just add them to this chart!

------------------------------

IMPORTANT NOTE: In FantasTech...Unicorns and Monoceros are NOT the same. Unicorns are horses, 100%, while Monoceros are not. Need an indicator? Check out how many toes does it have. One (Unicorn) or three (Monoceros)?

Also...Unicorns aren't animals. They are intelligent beings capable of speech and discourse. So that separates them even further.

-------------------------------

a) Alexander's Monoceros
- Aka, the Al-Mi'raj. They live in the Spice Kingdom.
- It is deceptively aggressive and territorial for its size. They can kill both bigger beasts and people with a simple burst of speed, and a stab from their horn. Other creatures give it a wide berth as a result.
- It is so called "Alexander's" because one was given as a gift many years ago to a hero named Alexander, for his heroism in slaying a Sea Serpent. Partly out of gratitude, partly to get rid of the ferocious creature.
- Despite what rumors say, they do not eat meat. They DO kill large beasts, and sharpen their teeth using their bones. They are especially hostile towards draconic creatures.
- However...they have a special fondness for spices, and the plants and herbs that produce them. One looking to take an Al-Mi'raj should have some on hand. Cinnamon is your best bet.

----------------------------

b) Pygmy Monoceros
- Aka, the Teacup Rhino. They live in the Savannah Kingdom, as well as various urban Kingdoms as pets.
- Long ago, they weren't much different from regular rhinos. However, they have been domesticated over time, and bred into smaller forms so that they require less food, less living space, and were less immediately aggressive.
- Even so, they've retained a good deal of their original strength. This means that a rather healthy population of feral individuals now lives in the Savannah Kingdom.
- Unlike most Monoceros species, Pygmies are gregarious. And unlike most prey animals, they often react to predators by charging. They often stick together in groups for safety, and will group charge predators. This behavior also makes them effective guard dogs.

------------------------------

c) Thorn-Tongued Monoceros
- Aka, the Sinad. They live in the Spider Kingdom and Lamp Kingdom.
- A disgusting, yet highly unique beast. It has a long, barbed tongue that it uses to scrape tough off vegetation and cactus thorns. It can potentially strip flesh off of bones, but Sinads don't do this, as they aren't carnivorous.
- They were falsely rumored to accidentally flay their calves alive by licking them clean, leading to the calves staying in their mother's womb until they're old enough to flee. This is false.
- What ACTUALLY happens is that the mother keeps her young calf in a pouch located below her anus. From this point on, the mother Sinad takes on a specialized diet, so it can defecate on its calf.
- As disgusting as that may sound, they do this for a reason. The mother's dung will help it cool off, so it doesn't die in arid conditions. It keeps bugs and parasites away. And lastly, the stench and rotting plant matter coating makes their calf all but inedible for predators. This has no adverse effects to the calf whatsoever, so long as the mother keeps its diet specialized to the task.
- After the Sinad calf becomes old enough to leave the pouch, it regularly rolls around in mud to replicate these same effects.

----------------------------------

d) Diving Monoceros
- Aka, the Camphruch. They live in the Archipelago Kingdom.
- These Monoceros have grown a fondness for eating fish. Therefore, they have taken to a more or less amphibious lifestyle, with splayed apart toes, and a hydrodynamic body shape helping it swim.
- Further assisting it is that most of its body is coated with a hydrophobic sweat. This helps reduce drag in water, but it also gives the Camphruch a rather musky odor.
- They dive into the water at great speeds to give them a head start, allowing their hydrodynamic bodies to keep them moving with minimal paddling, as they spear as many fish as they can manage on the end of their horns.
- They aren't especially vicious, but are territorial towards their fishing spots. They can and do use their horns to joust against intruders.
- The Camphruch has been widely poached for its horn, which is a highly valuable ingredient in Antidote Potions. Because it can't hunt or swim without its horn, it is a species protected against this practice.

----------------------------------

e) Royal Monoceros
- Aka, the False Unicorn. They live in the Royal Kingdom.
- They are as close to an actual Unicorn as a Monoceros can get. They mostly live in forests, and are largely solitary, staking out a large tract of land for themselves, and only meeting to mate.
- WARNING: VIRGINS AS MONO TRAPS DON'T WORK. Their sense of smell helps it detect anyone lying in wait. Including hunters trying to ambush them. Poachers who've tried this have often gotten themselves, and their "virgin maiden" killed in the process.
- However...this hasn't stopped people from trying to poach them, because every part of a Royal Monoceros' body can be used as a potion ingredient or healing agent of sorts. ESPECIALLY their horns and hide.
- They can't be conventionally tamed like horses. However...one can get close to them. All one has to do is just...lie down, without weapons, and without magic. The Mono will perhaps step on said person a few times, before confirming they are no threat to it.

P.S Poaching Royal Monos is illegal. However, a new practice has founded, of making artificial "pools" for Royal Monos, letting them bathe and drink from it, and essentially selling the "bathwater", which contains many medicinal benefits without having to kill the creature. This enchanted bathwater is known on the market as "Mono-Tea".

---------------------------------

f) Ney's Monoceros
- AKa, the Shadhavar. They live in the Lamp Kingdom.
- Unlike other Monoceros, its horn curves backwards, and is used not as a measure of offense, but rather communication. That is, it's hollow, so when air moves through it, the horn makes a sort of "song" like that from a flute.
- The more branches a Shadhavar's horn has, the more sound it makes. The development of new branches can be encouraged, via coating its horn in mud, having it solidify, and then chipping off the ends to make a new passage for wind. It becomes increasingly gnarled-looking and heavy as it grows. Which is potentially dangerous, as the Shadhavar must run fast to pass wind through its horn.
- The most branches a Shadhavar has been recorded with was 72 total. Most specimens typically reach "only" 42 branches. These horns in themselves are valued as a musical instrument.

--------------------------------

g) Lowering Horn Monoceros
- Aka, the Biasd Na Srogaig. They live in the Lake Kingdom and Highland Kingdom.
- These bizarre beasts typically live in ponds and lakes. Their legs are as long as they are, as they stand on the bottom, walking along so they can graze on moss and aquatic plants and weeds. They spend almost all of their time in water.
- Their upper bodies are lighter than they look, mostly filled with fat than muscle to help them stay afloat when needed. It's the only reason these beasts can move on land at all, albeit extremely awkwardly. They walk by swinging their legs outward and forward.
- Their horns are not only used to dig up pond weeds and moss for eating, but also containing magic that allows them to breathe underwater. On the off-chance that their horns get cut off, they simply stay in shallow waters, while others help them eat.
- They are one of the most docile species of Monos. While old wives' tales claimed they were savage lake monsters that ate children, nowadays most people are content to take their kids to hand-feed these beasts.

Heh. Well a lot of Cauldron's critters are strange.

Although also similar to many of Cauldron's fauna, these (except for the Teacup Rhino) were based off of actual mythology! Even the Al-Mi'raj in all its murderous glory. XD

No prob, dude, you still on Discord? I can tell you more about that new character now if you want, unless you'd rather finish reading the backstory of the Eabd first?

I think that's one of my favourites too
