Gotcha. Β I work in the Gulf of Mexico on the Discoverer Clear Leader. Β I was all kind of amused to see TOI red coveralls on someone else's page. Rock on dude.

Gritty but a sort of odd beauty in it - possibly the red of the suits and the chocolate brown of the muck. Β The zipper-like edge of the floor near the men adds to the 'chocolate' feel. I like this.

I've done this more than once.Β This captures the nasty grittiness of oilfield work.

Nice! I'd love to see more industrial shots hit the DDs. Machinery and workers are awesome!

That is a great shot. It makes you respect all those dirty, hard jobs and current economics.

That's oil?
It looks much more....chocolatey than I imagined. Always thought it'd be dark like black coffee. Shows you how much i know about things! No wonder people call it a dangerous place to work - the oil's all over the floor! Bet it's slippery.

This is almost surely drilling mud. Although most people see "THIS" and think this is oil. This has created a misconception that crude looks like tar or mud. Have a look at this:
Β Its a DA link, so im not sending you something sketchy.Β

O.O All the colours of the oil rainbow!
But what is drilling mud made of? Just mud? Because that looks awfully smooth for mud.

Drilling mud is less mud and more like dirty water. Its quite dense for what it is, but very very smooth. Its a man made concoction that is constantly adjusted for specific weight per volume and viscosity, and pumped down the drill pipe while drilling. Its significantly heavier than fresh water, so a column of it in the wellbore creates what's known as hydrostatic pressure. This is the first step in well control as this physical weight of liquid keeps the formation from flowing during drilling. Drilling mud also serves the purpose of lubrication and bringing up cuttings and debris. Its great stuff. Sometimes mud engineers use a mix of diesel as well. This is known as oil-based mud and that is some nasty shit.Β

The Oil you see here is without a doubt for the drill itself. It would melt or break without this xD

What you see there is what's called drilling mud.Β It's pumped down to lubricate the drill and makes it easier to slide the pipe.Β No oil in it.

O.O Alrighty then! Makes sense why there's such a copious amount of it around! Thank you for explaining

Its also part Oil-based-Mud which is a drilling lubricant.

Amusingly enough Transocean (the guys working this particular rig) were also the guys who owned the Deepwater Horizon which they charted to BP.
