Description
I guess that's the problem with giant sand worms, you put your thumper down to call one, wait around with your maker hooks and riding gear for 20 mins and then three turn up all at once! Typical! *rolls eyes*I am kind of semi happy and un-happy with this one. I tried 4 different attempts at getting the sand right on the worms and this was the best of the bunch (and was the second attempt) but it still dosen't feel quite right. Maybe if I had a little more experience in digital painting I could have pulled it off a little better, but none the less this is the best I could do.
Enjoy!

I think you did a very nice job with the digital painting in Photoshop, personally.
Dust and sand tend to be tricky. I do them a lot in Photoshop with the Deviney/Ron's brushes myself - and I have issues with certain brushes that just don't work, while others do.
I'm fangirling in the biggest way over this piece, and it is a fantastic render. (I want Wyrmworld now! )

Could you use ubervolume with clouds or something for that? I've just been playing a little bit here today with it, it's a gorgeous piece anyway, worthy of a book cover!

I've tried ubervolume in the past, but I end up getting white squares in the render, plus, I wanted more of a wind swept look than just sraight up 'air is full off dist'. That being said, it probably wouldnt have gone a miss, but then I would have had white squares everywhere. Still can't work out what causes it, lol.

hmm, interesting, in the couple of tests iIdid, I didn't have that problem at all.

It wouldn't be so bad if I got them in areas that I could easily fix in PS, but it always seem to appear over my characters in areas that are a b***h to fix! Ah well, I'll get it working one day, hehehe.

well, the luxus homegeous (sic) also looks interesting, I think Simon has been doing something with it.

I've still not really taken Luxus for a spin yet. When I first got it I loaded up a new character I've been working on(not posted anything with her yet) and did a basic 'scantily clad girl with infinity wall' render. It came out looking not to bad, but boy did the hair look terrible! No spec highlights to it all! I was just using the standard kind of settings I would use for DAZ which told me I need to get my hands dirt and set some Luxus materials for the likes of hair. Ofcourse though the problem with anything Lux Render based is the render times. It's hard to just sit and do quick fire tests like I can in DAZ, but it is something I want to start using for renders things like Dune renders to help beef them up a little. If only it was GPU based like Octane...or if only Octane didn't cost so damned much, hahaha.

you can use the GPU, make sure you have the OpenCL version and choose hybrid in the render settings. works a treat on my Nvidia chipset on the MAC. (had to find a proper driver, as the apple windows one didn't support it)

Sweet! I will give it a whirl! Does it make much of a difference to render time? At the moment I am still waiting for a memory stick to replaced by the manufacturer. I found that one of my 4GB RAM sticks was busted when I got home from hospital as my PC had been running the whole time I was there, nearly 7 months!. Not good for the hardware! I moved the mouse and the whole system just locked up and gave me all kinds of BSOD and boot loop errors when I restarted. When I messed with the RAM sticks she fired back up and the stick comes with a 5 year life time and it's only two years old so I sent it back to be replaced. I didn't say it had been running for just shy of 7 months straight when it broke though, hahahahaha.

not sure here, as I don't have a power system, some say it does, some say it doesn't, i guess it comes down to test renders.
7 months, wow, never had mine on that long b4

I think test renders will be the way forward. I might just try a simple 20 minute cut off point and see which looks the furthest progressed form a quality point of view and then go with those settings.
As for 7 months, it wasn't by choice thanks to the bike crash and I don't think I would recomend leaving your machine on that long! Shame there wasn't a Lux render going as it would probably have been rendered to within an inch of it's life!

in the Daz Lux render settings, you can set a cut off of spp, or time - [link]
prolly about 6 weeks is s long as i left mine, during the old downloading days

Ahh you called in a small maker!? Use a bigger thumper next time and call Shai-hulud!

Hehehe, it does look like a small maker, but it's all to do with the POV. If the character was placed furthr back next to the worm, she dosen't even a 10th of the way up his height. As for Shai-Hulud, you mean like this? [link]
Thanks for the comment!

Thanks hun, I have to say that the ideas are all stolen from Frank Herbert's book series Dune, so it's not quite so unique I'm afraid. Thank you for the comments hun!

I'd hate to see the size of the fish she's gonna be after with worms that big!

toadz In reply to SimonJM [2013-05-12 21:14:33 +0000 UTC]
Hahahaha. The worst thing is, the worms are really far behind her. I had her standing next to the one in the foreground and she didn't even reach the tip of he mouth on the right of the image, she looked tiny! If still never really found a very eefective way of keeping their scale looking massive when characters are bough into the foreground with them behind. Then when I put a character next to them, it throws the shot of balance wise. One day I'll get it!
As for the size of the fish, even Robson Green on one of his Extreme Fishing adventures wouldn't want to tussle with the fish you can catch with these bad boys!

No, joking aside, thanks buddy! I'd hoped it would have come out better, but it could have been alot worse. Some of the other attempts at doing the sand were really poor, lol.

Yeah; I installed DAZ Studio 4.5 on my netbook last night as the current desktop configuration won't play. Went to start up the netbook today to do something, and found out it wouldn't start up at all. I guess it's time for a new computer.

Hey, Toadz. I had the same problem today. I was rendering something and it just didn't come out the way I wanted it to, so I deleted it. It took me about an hour to render and that was even more annoying. I guess it's just one of those days.
By the way, a dentist would have a field day with those sand worm teeth.

Hehehe, yup, sometimes we get it right, some times we don't. The actual render I am really happy with, it's the Photoshop part of adding the dust that didn't turn out so well. Ah well, hopefulyl I'll get it right next time.
As for the teeth, you show me a dentist brave enough, and I'll show you a giant sand worm that won't eat the dentist!
