Description
“A Yellow Pansy”To the wall of the old green garden
A butterfly quivering came:
Her wings on the sombre liechens
Played like a yellow flame.
She looked at the grey geraniums,
And the sleepy four-o’clocks;
She looked at the low lanes bordered
With the glossy-growing box.
She longed for the peace and silence,
And the shadows that lengthened there,
And her wee wild heart was weary
Of skimming the endless air.
And now in the old green garden,
I know not how it came,
A single pansy is blooming,
Bright as a yellow flame.
And whenever a gay gust passes,
It quivers as if with pain,
For the butterfly soul that is in it
Longs for the winds again!
Paraphrased from Helen Gray Cone (19th Century)
I'm dedicating this piece to my Grandmother

This is beautiful, Sasha. The poem is so lovely and such a tribute to your grandmother. Wise King Solomon said that a good name is better than silver even gold. Your grandmother surely had made a good name for herself. My heartfelt sympathy for your great loss.

True words indeed Patricia! My Grandmother was in fact a very active and well respected member of the community...something that really came across when we celebrated her life just a few years ago on her 90th birthday. I was so glad that my family and I had that chance to express how we all felt while she was still with us.

Sasha, you were so fortunate to have had your Grandmother with you so long. I never had that privilege to have had any of my Grandparents with me that long. I also lost my Mother when I was just 14yrs old back in 1963, and my father in 1985.
I'm so happy to hear that your family had the chance and let your Grandmother know how much she was loved by you all.

Really beautiful, and a wonderful tribute to your Grandmother. I also extend my empathy for the loss you have suffered. There are no right words to say at these times, but just to say 'I care'.
