Description
This is an Apophysis script that makes flames like the one that you see in the preview or [link]It's based on the principles taught in `Halcyon83 s rotational tutorial: [link] and `CygX1 's tube and wire tutorial:
[link]
I'd also like credit ~deepbluerenegade who gave me the idea to add the user input variables to make the script more versatile.
v2 bugs and fixes:
1. Added julian to forbidden variations in random tube generator to avoid creating large "stubby" tube transforms with no modifying variations.
2. If the user is missing one of the required plugins, transform 2 will appear blank in flames where the plug-in would have been randomly selected. If the user doesn't want to use the 3 plug-ins, suitable variations can be manually added to the blank transforms where required.
v3 fixes:
3. Script guru Fred (Fracscient) from FracFan Forum helped me come up with a way to enable repeatedly running the script without crashing it. Thanks Fred!!!
4. Fred also helped me work out a way to convert the tube size and tube variable generating subroutines into functions. This allowed me to set these parameters independently for different transforms, which translates to more variety for you. I also added more possible tube sizes for even greater combinations.
5. For the accent transform (transform #2), I added some random numbers to the dimension parameters in order to add more variety to the batches.
6. Molly (aka ~deepbluerenegade ) pointed out a flaw in the loop that generates the rotated linear transforms. This has now been fixed and there is no longer a gap between the tube transforms and the rotated copies.
7. I added a "Tips and tricks" note to the zip file that includes a link to the required plug-ins as well as some
tips and tricks that I developed to help beginners (or those of you who are new to rotationals) make the most out of this script.
8. I created a new cover image using this version of the script (plus a few of the tweaks mentioned in my crib notes). For those who really liked the original cover image, fear not - I will eventually upload a higher res version.
Happy Fractaling everyone!

I think that there is a missing linear transform in the script in the first position after the original tube structure. I manually added a fix to the fractal that I am working on but I think you might have an indexing problem, where you add some degrees before you place the first linear transform.
I haven't learned the scripting language yet, and I don't have the time to for a few months, so I hope this helps.

Hi Molly,
I modelled the script after the way that Tom set up the transforms in his rotational tut - so the second transform is not supposed to be one of the linear ones. If it's showing up completely blank in some of the random flames that the script is generating for you, my guess is that you're probably missing one or more of the required plug-ins (i.e., Escher, Lazysusan or Loonie). Assuming that this is the case, you can insert a substitute variation manually where needed (like you did) OR you can get the plug-ins and then re-run.
I found and fixed a separate issue that I discovered in the random tube generator and re-released the script as version 2. This will produce better results more consistantly. See my "artists comments" above for more details.
I also found a bug when trying to re-run the batch script. I haven't scripted a workable solution yet, but did suggest a manual fix in my artists comments that will work in the meantime...
Thanks for helping me beta-test Molly I really appreciate your feedback!

Haha, I think you fixed different things than what I asked about.
I have been manually adding another linear transform that is 1 to 3 degrees (whatever angle I specified) off horizontal, because there is a gap between the original tube and the cloned tubes.
Is that how the script is supposed to work, with the gap?

You got me there! With all the other glitches that have been creeping up, I didn't even notice the gap until you pointed it out
The fix is quite simple actually - just move the inc(i); line to the end of the begin-end loop that generates the linear transforms (instead of the begining). I'll add this fix to the next update. I'm hoping to figure out how to get the script to stop crashing between successive runs soon - so hopefully I can include that in the next fix also...

If it is possible maybe you can call up a new batch when you run the script so you aren't rototubing the rototubes (maybe that is the point I'm not sure)

That's exactly what I tried to do. Unfortunately, and for some reason that I can't explain, it still crashed even after I got the script to succesfully load a random batch before begining the rototubes procedures I posted a query to the FracFan forum (the best resource for anyone who has a question about Apo scripting) but didn't get any replies yesterday
. Hopefully someone will get back to me soon. In the meantime, I suppose we'll just have to keep loading in the random batches manually in between rototubes runs (sigh)...

Thanks for the heads up on this problem Molly. I'll certainly look into this. I've also noticed over the weekend that there seems to be a small problem with the random tube generator. I'll try to get these bugs ironed out and post the fixed code as an update shortly...

Have fun with it... Feel free to drop me a note to show me what you've come up with, or if you'd like any additional tips and tricks on how to tweak more out of the designs that the script generates.

Hi there `ToAPP Thank you for responding to my note. In fact I did use it, but after applying the script was not happy with the result, probably didn't "reply" with the right parameters and after that used many other scripts and as I say in the "Artist's comments" also duplicated some of the Triangles and tweaked some of the parameters. Used a Marble script too.
But I think that the basics of your script still show in my "Nanouniverse ... " I think I saved the resulting flame, if you want I can try to "fish" it and send it to you. (I wish I weren't such a newbie

Well don't get discouraged Martha. It takes quite a while to get decent looking designs with Apo (I've been at it for a while, and I'm still learning
) I always spend ages tweaking every fractal I create - even the ones that start off using scripts. Also I think that there are some problems with this script that I can fix to make things at least a little easier for you. I'll try to get an update posted (hopefully tonight). In the meantime, if you use the default parameters you should be able to generate at least one or two good rotationals in every batch that you run. If you do get a bad batch, you can re-run the script - but only after running a random batch in between. Otherwise the script will crash unfortunately (this is one of those problems that I have to fix
). If you don't know how to do this, I can explain in more detail once I get home tonight and have access to Apo.
Also I'd be happy to help you tweak any parameters that you'd like to note to me (they don't have to be flames that you've already rendered either - any flame that the script generates would be fine as a starting point)...Maybe this might help you learn some of tricks that I use?
Good luck!

I am not sure that what I got was not good because of any problem with your script. Sometimes I don't go with the suggested parameters when they appear in the script's dialog boxes, and probably I didn't use what was advised or sometimes when the result is too similar to the model I re-run it as I don't want to copy it
I can tell and see that it takes lots of practice to get some decent results. The good thing for newbies, is that you feel really awed when you get some "wow" result
Thank you for your help ... and the good wishes

Hi Martha
I fixed one glitch that was affecting the quality of the batches and re-released the script as v2. This will provide more of those "wow" moments that all of us apoholics anticipate when we run these scripts Another problem that you could be encountering is that you don't have the Apo plug-ins that this script requires (loonie, escher and lazysusan). You should be able to find them at=Fractal-Resources and download them to the plugins folder in your Apophysis directory. Alternatively, you can manually insert any substitute variation into transform 2 (which may be showing up as blank in some cases). I think that it is great that you don't want to stick to the default params and I encourage you to explore as many different possibilities as you can.
FYI: *Apophysis is running a rotational fractal contest this week. You may want to enter one of your recent experiments here so that other members of our fractal community can get more of a chance to see your work.

Aww you are so kind.
What I noticed yesterday with the version I have is that you can't run it twice not even adding a random mutation in between.
I got some really pretty formations but ... got greedy and when added a random mutation and tried to run the script again, Apo froze and I could not use any script.
It happened some three times.
But have something that will post at the *Apophysis WTC and of course the first thing I thought about when reading about the new contest subject was your Rototubes Script
Again thank you

I can't wait to see your entry in the contest! BTW, it's not the random mutation feature (F7) that one has to run in between rototubes batches , it's File> Random batch (or press Ctrl+B as a shortcut). This replaces any rototubes flames in your viewer with a set of duller random flames that Apo usually generates when starting up. You should also wait until the first random flame finishes rendering in the viewer before re-running Rototubes otherwise it can still crash the script and then- yup you got it - you have to close and re-start apo to get any scripts to work again. I've been trying to write a better solution into the script itself - but no luck so far

I won't get onto it today. It's Sunday, so I do a full, traditional English dinner. Roast lamb, mint sauce, roast and mashed potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and gravy, closely followed by either pineapple upside down cake with custard or chocolate gateau, wine to drink and coffee and liqueurs to follow......for 8
