Description
Because 'tis better to laugh, than to weep.--------------------------------------
My first reaction to the casting list was mild annoyance.
Then I read the reactions of my fellow Avatards, the minority fans who found a touchstone in this series.
I am not the black girl who rejoiced to find--for the first time--a relatable animated heroine of a race similar to her own. I am not the minority parent who will have to explain to his children why their heroes don't look like them anymore.
But I can still be frustrated, disgusted, and infuriated on their behalf--and on my own behalf, at the realization that this choice was made "for" me and people like me, white fans who love this show for its diversity and yet are expected to avoid the movie if it displays the same quality.
(I'm leaving Shyamalan off the hook for now--directors often don't have much say in casting, and his brown daughters' love for Katara was what got him interested in the first place. I assume he's as crushed as we are by this.)
--------------------------------------
For the record, yes, there is something you can do. The casting call ain't over till the Cabbage Man sings.
To folks with something to say--let's keep the comments on this as mature and sensible as you awesome people always do in this little gallery of mine. Peace, y'all.

Well, yes, but the pun wouldn't work that way. :/
(It's Samurai Champloo, by the way - named after an Okinawan stir-fry!)

Lol, Ichigo. So smug.

I use a lot of XDs, too. ^^ I also avoided the movie because of the casting, although everything I read in the reviews had caused me to think it was fifteen dollars well-saved on every count possible. XD;

I ended up not watching the movie because of the casting! Says the same person who watched every episode at least 6 times over the summer xD I really dislike the final casting of Zuko... really.... Katara looked just like another girl at my school (pale skin brown hair) not the amazing Katara we know! Aang looked chubby in my opinion kinda like a huge baby xD Okay okay my rant is over don't wory. But your drawing is so to the point

I dunno...are you talking about black people? Because the point here was getting the right roles for Asian and Native American/Canadian actors. Shyamalan did put some black actors into the film, but they ended up just functioning as window dressing to disguise the fact that he'd shoved white actors into the main roles. Most of them didn't even have lines. Nasty hypocrisy.

Let me give out a rant
To me the movie is the same racist shit Cameron did in Avatar, White people are the heroes
Who were the main heroes from the Eskimo tribe
The Whites
Who lead the dumbly written Asians that can not bend rock, even though they are surrounded with all the weapons they could have wanted
The White man
Who were the main villians
It had the White Messiah hero that have to keep the peace for a bunch savage retarded monkeys that needed the White man to conquer them in order to not kill themselves
The Last Airbender is the modern "Birth of a Nation"
This is the most racist movie since Soul Plane
M Night is a no good Uncle Tom sellout like Tyler Perry

Gee, the rest of humanity, how did y'all get along before we mighty white people got some boats and showed up to fix everything, anyway? What did you even do with yourselves? Geez.
(Well, I mean, besides inventing mathematics and gunpowder and calligraphy and exam-based standardized education and the rudders that made the boats work and all the rest of that stuff. I guess you had to keep busy somehow, waiting for us.)

I'm sorry, I just watch Undercover Brother again, Dave Chappelle's character "Conspiracy Brother" always made me think
I just find the Last Airbender incredibly offensive, now let me tell you about the "Blind Side" or aka "Rich Cracka Trains Dumb Gorrilla" now in the film Massa Bullock decided to ....

Thank you for saying this in a mature manner. I try to explain the hubris involved in making this decision for us and the waste of would could have been something epic for all races to see. Instead, we got perpetuation of the same old same old.

lol. JET. XD
i know, still.. it just makes me wish that some other director's kids had watched the show, what with shyllamalan's (<--done on purpose) history of not-so-successful movies.
but then again, we should all be thankful-- zuko was this close to being played jesse mccartney. thank goodness slumdog came in to save the day, along with his faithful sidekick, dreads, otherwise known as "Ee-roh"! (immense sarcasm and conflict as to which she prefers-- trying-to-still-be-a-teenage-popstar or good-boy-trying-to-be-bad-with-a-smudge-of-red-on-his-face-is-that-a-scar-?)

Man, the first thing I said when I saw Jackson playing Sokka was: He still has his twilight make-up on. *spazzes out* Ugh i never even thought about the PoC thing. I mean im black and I did look up to Katara. But I really felt bad for the Native Americans. They finally had some characters in a popular kids show that looked like them and had similar cultures...but sadly Hollywood has ruined that.

So he does, alas. Sucks to have to deal with the hairdye stigma in the Japanese school system when you're not a bleacher. It is apparently true that some Japanese people are born natural redheads, though...

Kaytara [2009-10-07 04:38:41 +0000 UTC]
Ugh. They really messed the casting up. I mean, Zuko of all people is someone I think they actually should have cast as either Caucasian or Japanese, and they cast him as.. Dev Patel? Bwuh?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TobuIshi In reply to Kaytara [2009-10-07 14:54:08 +0000 UTC]
He certainly should have been East Asian. The casting for Aang, Sokka and Katara disturbs me even more, though. There aren't enough opportunities for PoC actors in fantasy in the first place, without casting Caucasians in the few roles that pop up that they really should be getting. Bleh.

I was and am so pissed off about this whole whitewashing debacle, especially once they rearranged it so that all of the badguys are non-white. Really, could they be less subtle? Sheesh. Anyway, kudos to you for bringing more attention to the issue. On an art-related note, I love the way you do expressions. Sokka's horror-face in the fourth panel is priceless.

As for your notes on the art, thank you! That face was based on his FOOD EATS PEOPLE rant, actually. I do love Sokka and his rubber face.
