WATER PLUS HEAT EQUALS STEAM. THE WORLD CAN BE SAVED BY STEAM.Zuko, on the other hand, is in deep trouble. XD
(Fun with the smudge brush! This was a lot of fun to draw, and it only took about nine hours from starting pencils to finishing CG job. I've been wanting to draw these two sparring in a (more or less) friendly fashion for ages, especially since the series denied me that pleasure with the Earth Book finale. I particularly enjoyed trying to make Zuko's scar blush...
For the record, I came to like this pairing long before I ever dipped a tentative toe into the fandom--my friend Hibari and I had long conversations over the summer about Avatar and these two were one of our favorite topics. Their initial main merit for us was that they could alter ENTIRE WEATHER PATTERNS in a single lovers' spat! They've been continuing to grow on me ever since.
Incidentally, I still prefer our name for the pairing--"STEAM"--to the fandom standard, and probably always will.)

As a matter of fact, it was just simple, obsessive use of the Smudge brush in Photoshop. Make a layer, scribble some appropriate color on it, then smudge it around. The trick is to make sure to smudge all in the same direction, to get that flowing look...

Yay, STEAM reference! That is totally the icing on the (already delicious) cake. Although when I read the first sentence, the first thing that came to mind was the running commentary my friend and I kept up during that movie. As I recall, we said "And that's why you failed chemistry!"
This is a really cool picture. I love the "oh no" look on Zuko's face.
As for the weather patterns? I can totally see that happening.

That was the first time I ever drew Zuko, and he still bugs me. Katara looks okay, but Zuko looks like a startled DBZ character. :/

His hair does look a little pointy, but not too much. It still looks good. HE doesn't look as DBZ as Aang did in "Nightmares and Daydreams," though.

M. Night Shyamalan will be directing three live-action films. Mike and Bryan are producing. Each film will be a fairly faithful retelling of each of the Avatar seasons, Water through Fire. The first is being titled "The Last Airbender" in order to avoid a title battle with James Cameron's "Avatar". More than that, I don't really know...but, since they're retellings, they're unlikely to affect show canon.
...and who knows, maybe Mr. Shyamalan will have a different take on a few things. :3

No problem, I do that all the time. And yeah, it'd be really cool to see a new spin on the series, at least as long as he doesn't butcher it in the process.
Personally, I'm hoping for some nifty inclusion of authentic Inuit and other Native Canadian culture in the Water Tribes...

Yeah, I'm a little wary of his habit of putting a "huge twist" (although I din't think I'd complain very much if said twist was Zutara) in his movies.

Thank you! It's not that hard, if you have a good smudge brush on your coloring program of choice. You just blob on some blues and whites, a touch of green and brown, then swirl it around a whole bunch...

I was just the other day having a conversation about how the Zuko-Katara-Aang triangle is dangerous because with heat/water/wind battling each other, you get things like hurricanes.
(I also considered how Toph and Katara could join forces and make Tsunami.)

Who the hell is stupid enough to try to infiltrate the fortress of the Northern Water Tribes while they're all mobilized for war? Who the hell is stupid enough to dive down a hole in the ice because he saw some marine animals swimming into it? To pick a fight with a waterbender next to a pond of supercharged magical water? To capture an Avatar on the very threshold of entering the Avatar State and think a few coils of rope can hold him? To then run aimlessly into a frozen wasteland with no escape plan or way out?
