Description I've been doing a lot of elaborate projects that eat up an entire evening lately. After watching Avatar episode 313, The Firebending Masters, I had a lot of ideas but didn't feel like putting them into fully realized comic form.

Basically, I am lazy.

So here are several Post-It notes' worth of my post-313 laziness. They'll be going into scraps at the end of the day.

(The text runs as follows:

Zuko: Today I learned that hatred is wrong, and a bad way to power bending!
Katara: >HATE!!<
Zuko: Um. Despite my role models.)

She's gonna have to work on that, what with the capability to bloodbend and all. She might hurt somebody.

Haha...it's so true. I love the way Katara's loopies are flipping up at the top. Strangely, Zuko looks like Jet at the end there...maybe it's the eyebrows? (not quite his square root signs, but close enough, lol).

Clearly I've been drawing too much Jet lately! And to be honest, the flippy loopies were to expose as much crazyface as possible, but I do like the final effect. ^_^

IT's as if the heat from the fire is blowing them upward. Very....demonic, shall we say?

Poor Katara. I really am quite fond of her...

Me, too. But not lately. I mean, I still love her, but knowing her, I wonder if there's a part of her that she refuses to listen to that cringes at what she's saying and doing. Not because she doesn't mean it, but because of what it's turning her into. Not exactly "gently nudging" now, is she? :'( Poor girl.

Hate the new Katara? Hard on her? No, my main feelings are that I hurt for her. I really, really empathize and feel her pain. Because this isn't like Toph's snide remarks, or even Katara's (kind of funny) anger at Toph in Bitter Work and the Runaway. It's not even like her anger at Zuko in Crossroads of Destiny. This is deeper, and harsher, and colder. Because a part of her heart, the part that believed the best of everyone, got deeply wounded - so in self defense, she turned it icy. There are a lot of reasons why, as TobuIshi mentioned above.

I don't swear, but even if I did I wouldn't use the B word to describe her. And Zuko's not just "embodying the Fire Nation" - he, specifically, betrayed her personally. He's the one whose actions changed everything, and killed Aang. I absolutely agree with you that her reaction is reasonable. In fact, I also agree that they're entitled to their picking. But just because you're entitled to something doesn't mean it's best.

I think the way they're acting, Katara specifically because it's so different from her usual/old attitude, is hurting her. Not Sokka so much, since biting sarcastic remarks are normal for him. But I really do believe that a part of her that she's not listening to right now is cringing at the way she's acting, because it's not good for her, and it's not good for the group or the mission.

I don't think, though, that this sprang from nowhere - you got it exactly right, it's part of the duality of water.

So yeah. I don't hate her. She's absolutely my favorite. I just feel very sad for all the hurt and hate that's eating her up on the inside.

Though Zuko does deserve a little hazing, no matter how much I love him. Just cause you're awesome now doesn't mean you're not responsible for what you did before.

^_^ Does that make more sense? I hope my viewpoint is clearer now!

Why is everyone so hard on Katara? Toph makes snide comments at least 7 times an episode, and so does Sokka (esp. in this episode).

Katara makes a couple of jabs at Zuko because she doesn't trust the guy, and all the sudden everyone's like "oh, she's being a total bitch!" She's not being a bitch. To her, Zuko embodies the fire nation...whose members killed her mother, repeatedly threatened her life and the lives of her friends, and betrayed her at a critical point. It's totally reasonable that she wouldn't be all loveydovey to a guy who represents all the hurt and pain in her past.

So many people keep saying that they "hate the new Katara". Well I like Katara's duality...I feel like she really embodies the nature of water. Mothering, full of nurturing care and love, yet also deadly, relentless and unforgiving.

I think both the water tribe kids are entitled to a little picking. Let's all haze Zuko! Come on, it'll be fun!

She's gotten very bitter and tied up in knots lately. I think having to watch her father nearly die put some kinks in her system, not to mention the sense of failure regarding the botched invasion, and having been unable to help her friends at the key moment of the plot. Having to accept Zuko into the group is yanking on all the wrong points of those knots. (Why can he help them when she couldn't? Why are they trusting the betrayer against her word? etc.)

I do think, though, that this offers an interesting new spin on the Zuko/Katara pairing. It's the first time he's ever had anything significant to teach her...how to let go of anger, something he's just started learning himself...

WishIWould In reply to TobuIshi [2008-01-06 09:27:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's very true! I never really thought of it that way about Zuko having something to teach her, now. I'm very interested to see how it all pans out. Katara has always been my favorite character, and I really want to see her work through all that.

Me, too. I don't know if I could pick a favorite character in Avatar (it's hard to even name any I don't like in some way), but Katara is very dear to my heart, and I miss her warmer, gentler attitude. I hope she works through this, too, and grows from it.

WishIWould In reply to TobuIshi [2008-01-07 00:48:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure she will. It's just an innate part of her character to fight through things like this - not necessarily just the determination, but the desire to be warm and loving. I can't wait to see that.

I wonder what Aang thinks of how she's been acting?

Haha! Jokes aside, I DO wonder that...though I doubt she'll be very responsive. Anger, especially anger springing from hurt, is stubborn.
