Description
Nightmares can frighten anyone, but perhaps the most horrifying one of all, would be to loose your family. A relative passing on of old age, or perhaps a tragic accident. Most of these happen quickly, sometimes even in one's sleep they could die peacefully. Usually, one or two relatives would pass at a time. Not if you're an engine, especially a steam engine.
The 50s and 60s were the grimmest times for these powerful, elegant and faithful machines, as poor 57646 realised the hard way one Autumn in 1959.
The engine was on his merry way to Sodor. But, he planned to stop off at another shed first. He was to pick up his twin brother, 57647. The controllers on both railways insisted that 46 go by himself, but to have his twin by his side would make the experience a ton more fun. They could meet new faces faster, tell more tales about their beloved Scotland to the other engines, teach them Auld Langs Aye...
"Whaur is he!?" 46 cried out in horror, realising his brother wasn't there. The engine looked all over the shed, hoping that he may have gone out to find his next goods or something of the sort.
He didn't find him. But what he did find, was 47's driver and fireman. They admitted they couldn't find their engine either.
"Thir's ainlie yin place he cuid be." The driver said gravely.
46 urged the crew into the cab, and rushed off to some old sidings.
------
When he got there, 46 was even more mortified than he had ever been in his life. On many tracks were his withdrawn brothers and sisters. Some were coughing and sputtering. Some had no coal in their tenders. But all were without their crew, and the vast majority of them had rust spots on them.
46 had know this was happening, but he never thought in his life he would see this for himself.
"46..." coughed one of his sisters, "We're glad ye'r 'ere."
46 was in a full blown panic, and everything he said came out in a jumbled rush.
"Haud oan, guys. Ah will find yer crew, git some workmen tae fix ye, fin' some kind buyers fur ye 'n'..."
"Dae nae fash, 46." Said one of his brothers hoarsely, "We heard ye wur aff tae sodor. Maist o' us wilnae be muckle uise thare."
"Thare haes tae be something ah kin dae!" 46 tried to hold tears back, "Yer family! It's nae richt tae..."
"Thare is something." Said another one of his sisters. "Tak' 47 wi' ye."
46 looked over. Alone on one siding was his twin, 57647. Unlike the others, 47 was in really good condition. He still had some coal in his tender, and what's more, 46 had brought his crew along with him.
"Me?" Asked 47 anxiously, "bit... Whit aboot..."
"If Sur Topham sees ye in guid workin' order," another sister perked in, "he kin be able tae see yer baith useful 'n' keep ye. Ye hae th' best chance o' staying thare wi' yer twin, 47."
Though a little reluctant, 47 accepted the offer. His crew hopped into his cab and 46 turned around to buffer up to him. The crew decided to save the coal in 47's tender until they got to Barrow, then they would uncouple from each other for the last bit of the journey.
"Goodbye..." the twins sobbed as the former started puffing away. "We wull ne'er forgoat ye."
The others exchanged their goodbyes as well, knowing this would be the last time they would see their youngest siblings.
-----
This was based on TheMasterOfLemons' first episode where Gordon saw his siblings like this, but could do nothing about it. I thought of what it would be like if the twins ended up like that.

It is awful, isn't it? Having to make sacrifices.

I know. I remember one quote about one engine that was ready to accept his fate. It was quite dark.

It goes like this: "I don't know... steam has to be better than this... they wore me up, I get sludge in my valves and rust seeping out of me... I don't know what lies beyond the scrap line... but I can tell you for now: Sometimes you just want the steam to stop flowing... the bearings to stop creaking... and the oil to stop dripping..."

I know. Sometimes these engines have no choice but to accept their fate once they're on the scrap line.

Yeah. Something which I think Oliver almost accepted, had Douglas not come to the rescue.
