MUSIC: Skullgirls OST/The Seat of Power

...and now for something spectacular!!

For Christmas this year, I've decided to give the Skullgirl team my review of this wonderful and yet and still phenomenal fighter!

Skullgirls Review: A Fighting Game For People Who Like To Fight!

With mainstream successes like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and even Marvel vs Capcom found their way into the hearst of others, Skullgirls is a small downloadable game that takes a different approach on things. This is a game that focuses on balance, power, skill and wit. What is the approach this game has taken? Sexy girls that love to fight and lots and LOTS of panty shots! But this is just part of the package. The true satisfaction isn't rewarded until you pick up the game and start to dig deep.

The first thing anyone notices in Skullgirls is the hypersexualization of its all-female cast. A stereotypical nurse, a schoolgirl babe, a clown, a princess and..some kid who struggles with an identity crisis between Mickey mouse and Bugs Bunny? In this 2D fighter, the skirts are short, the legs are long, and the chests are, well, you get the idea. It's a treat for some, but for those who scoff at this most basic of carnal pleasures, take heed: behind all the eye candy rests a well-designed fighting engine that addresses several annoyances found in other contemporary fighters. And because this game takes the time to find that path to perfection, you look at how different and unique it is to common psn game Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Yeah, I know, its a broken game and people like to be Class-A faggots (pardon the French) when it comes to it winning. How many people pick their team based off of highest tiers and how many people pick their teams based on spamming? I'd say 115% of all MvC3 players. It's the same ol thing when it comes to those guys. But then again when you're working with 3 attack buttons which are just light to hard buttons with a launcher as your bestie you don't really have anything else to do. HOWEVER, this is where Skullgirls addresses the issues of your common broken fighter. Some say the game is broken. That's equivalent to also saying that Mitt Romney wouldn't get rid of abortions (when we all know that's a lie, since he woulda done it)

Developer Reverge Labs (currently Lab Zero) has built this game whose pacing feels akin to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3--with a little less overwhelming insanity. Ok, now I'm lying, if anyone has into an experience Valentine Main it's UMvC3 all over again! But that can easily be stopped! Skullgirls saves its spectacle for the characters, while keeping its combat fast and focused. This isn't to say that Skullgirls lacks depth. Each character feels wildly distinct from the rest. Even the two projectile-focused fighters like Peacock and Parasol handle differently. Peacock fills the screen with fast-moving projectiles, while Parasol uses timed explosives and long-range pokes. With only eight characters, Skullgirls' roster may not be as large as other fighters--but its combatants are nicely varied. And this is why having only eight characters doesn't mean a thing. Were people whining when MarioKart was heavily focused on eight characters? NO...

Skullgirls allows you to bring one to three characters to a fight, even if your opponent chooses a different combination. These different combinations provide interesting variability to how the game plays. But be warned, if you're smart you'll match the damage output. Many players do love to take advantage of this. A single character can deal and withstand more damage than those of a two- or three-person team; however, that single character loses the ability to call for assist attacks, to link hyper combos, or to recover lost health while tagged out. This creates a natural balance to keep one combination from having an overwhelming advantage over the other two. Adjustable team sizes naturally scale the complexity as well. Having more characters on a team means more variables to internalize during a fight. A lone, super-powered fighter is easier to manage than three average-strength ones. This trade-off between raw strength and versatility helps accommodate a wider skill range.

At its core, Skullgirls is a no frills fighting game. Each character has six standard attacks (three punches, three kicks) that are used to perform various combos, air combos, special moves, and blockbuster attacks. If you’ve played any of Capcom’s versus games, this should feel instantly familiar. However unlike Marvel vs Capcom games where characters a placed on tier lists and have different health stats, Skullgirls throws that shit out of the window. Sure infinities are fun and they make you look like a badass, but repeating the same combo over and over that opponents cant break out of don't make you look cool. What it means is have no defense and you lack the ability to block. I know since I've ran into players like this. They are constantly attacking up to the point that the block button doesn't exist to them. Infinite loops are just what this situation sounds like. It's an attack string that can be repeated indefinitely. Most fighters patch these out on a case-by-case basis, but Skullgirls just says "no" with its Infinity Breaker. This quick, invulnerable attack is available only when an infinite is detected, it deals no damage, and it knocks the opponent away. Good call Lab Zero!

The one mode that does stand out to most is the tutorials mode. This is both good because the tutorials do a great job at teaching you when and why you should be using various attacks on your opponent. however during a patch update the tutorials mode included an more in-depth experience with all the characters telling you who they fight, how to use them and a details description of all of their moves. not every fighting game does this. Most fighters teach you how to look like a badass but forgets to teach you the element of defense.

This game isn’t for everyone, it’s combination of gorgeous animation, phenomenal soundtrack, fine tuned fighting mechanics, and smooth online play makes it worth a try for fans of the genre. Even though the majority of the planet might not be interested in a highly technical 2D fighting game populated completely by sexy monster anime girls, If you think you might be, I recommend giving this one a shot. It's a dame good game and it becomes fun when you find people who play it! Maybe about 5 people who have my DeviantArt have my PSN and they know I'm constantly on this game.

4 puns out of 5. If the roster were bigger, it would be a perfect 5.

Favourite character: Cerebella
Favourite Stage: The Medici Tower
Team of Choice: Cerebella & Valentine

Even though Cerebella is good at heart, she has no idea that the Mafia has their own dark agenda. She dedicates herself to getting to all of the little boys and girls who have been angels this year, but of course Nadia Fortune tries to ruin it and Cerebella puts her shenanigans to a quick halt. Looks like the Medici Mafia will be getting the Life Gem for Christmas after all.

...uh oh...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!

Sounds like I haven't updated my Skullgirls mae then, because more in depth tutorials are what I need! I'm not super good at fighting games, but this one was the first who taught me how to actually play.

Well then...I might have to try this game out...seeing as I really need to get back into the fighter genre...

Anyways, like the Vinyl Scratch plushie in the bag...I so want it...I'd take any of the ponies in a plushie form...especially Pinkie Pie...love the art......and I don't know what else to say. Glad to see more art coming from you.

This is a pretty fun game. It may feel sluggish and slow at first but once you know how to play, you will realize how fast and fun it can become. It's got a lot of resets and whatnot but it's still broken and full of mindless infinites like most fighting games have. I've been playing it so much that when me and my friends went on UMvC3 they noticed how soft I've gotten since I've been so obsessed with Skullgirls. But It won't take that long for me to get back on par. It never usually takes One to retain his old stride when going back to something.

Thanks for the comment man. Hopefully before the 25th I'll be able to post my surprise image.

This game is amazing. Haven't tried it yet? where have you been! It's been out for almost a year now. 6 fight buttons, 2 assists, custom team sizes, and women galore is a dream come true.

funny how Dead or alive is known sort of for having hentai-ish girls and Tekken being known for its popularity and yet and still I overlooked them both for this small fighter.

Thanks. It's not hair that's on her head, that's a giant hat that she controls and uses as a weapon. She calls it Vice-Versa. And of course Vinyl Scatch is in the bag goin' for a ride. A special ride for the DJ Pony.
