Description
lol you guys I don't even know WHAT to say about this one. I had this list of shit that i'd been wanting to paint for a while (jungly setting, crazy hair pieces, non-white people, lighning bugs,) and I was like KAY i'm'a make a painting of them. So I was working on it and I was realy excited about it and it had all this philosophy and stuff behind it and I was really into this whole character type and development and culture and whatnot and i'm painting away and then i'm likeoh.
I drew some Na'vi.
HAHA OH WELL at least i realized it before someone said that to me. I think it's a good thing to let your influences take hold sometimes......but usually it's better when it's intentional. Decided to share it anyway cause I (think?) I"m proud of it technically.
watercolor and gouache, done over two days.

This is gorgeous
I saw Pocahontas, not Na'vi
But then again, I must be the only person in the universe who hasn't seen that movie xD

Haha well, friend, if you have seen pocahontas, then you have basically seen avatar.
Not dissing it, great movie, but you know, "no new stories" and all that.
thank you!

thank you for this one.
I had a dream that included exactly this scene a week ago
it's nice to see it into art, into the "real world"
I believe you must write, draw or at least tell the dreams you have, as to take them out of "that" world into "this" one
so again, thank you for bringing it to this world

Her face and hair are exquisite but there's something strange about her wrist/hand to me.

I am actually left speechless, so I'm not sure what to write. Na'vi or not, I love this anyway. The feeling it gives me is pretty much undescribable. Technically, it's amazing. The brushwork, the lighting, the anatomy. But then, all these create such a lively, evocative atmosphere, that really makes the viewer FEEL things, not in an over-emotional way, but in more subtly and emotively. It's really something I can't describe, but I'll love this (and you) forever.

the lightning is in a way both subtle and bold, that's wonderful. the whole piece is so very elegant and harmonic, it fits the pieceful, rapt mood.
and no, i didn't see na'vi when i looked at them. ^^

Great lighting, great feel. Na'vi wasn't my first thought at all. This piece just drew me in so deeply that I felt I had to comment. Such a touching emotion here... even in the deepest, wildest jungle, people share the most civilized form of love and connections.

This is beautiful!
I love how you render forms in your hand at strokes. Such beautiful color mixing too.
Also! I did not think you drew Na'vi. Beautiful native characters in a tropical setting have existed long before James Cameron decided to turn them into blue alien things. :33

I almost like it more as an Avatar picture, if only for one reason. The movie was made at least partly to bring attention to our own environmental problems and the Na'vi are based on real first peoples who are still being mistreated. Everyone's all about the blue kitties (I like them too) but aren't really thinking about their counterparts on Earth. Ahh, didn't mean to get all ranty on you. It's a very beautiful picture and I dig the ultra-high cheekbones and foreheads.

Wow! I really love this. I can see what you mean by the Avatar influence, though I wouldn't have noticed it you hadn't mentioned it! The picture is just beautiful overall, though.

Omgosh this is so much better than Avatar
The colors are so gorgeous!! I am absolutely in love with how solid and beautiful their skin looks, and the light in the back is so lovely. This reminds me of a lot of old illustrations for Kipling stories, I have no idea why! Something about the palette maybe? Dark but still soft somehow~ loooove

When I saw it, I was reminded of Na'vi. But when I looked at it, and took more of it in, I can see it as not Avatar related, and just its own beautiful peace. I really like it, something different from what is usually seen.

It's pretty cool, their faces are gorgeous! and yeah, I have to admit that I thought "avatar" as soon as I saw this... but hey, just because someone thought it up before you did, it doesn't make your it your idea any less!... right? hahahaa stellar job

Gorgeous. I was actually thinking more about the tale of Dream and his first wife from Niel Gaiman's Sandman series.
It is beautiful regardless.

Aww, I didn't get the Na'vi vibe until you said it, but boo on current things for relating themselves to everything in our minds 9w9
And this is so, so lovely, either way.
Goddamn, everything about it is super pretty and well done.

I think this is beautiful. I believe the na'vi were an influenced idea from tribal people, so it's only natural the influence would then flow in reverse. Your picture is more authentic to reality.

But this piece is beautiful, I love all the subtly highlights

"oh.
I drew some Na'vi."
LOL
well just because they're colored people doesn't mean they're related to NaVi
it's the NaVi that are related to colored people.
Anyway, you always such beautiful art!

I didn't get Na'vi when I first saw this. :]
I understood that they were Tribal folk.
Unfortunately every time someone draws something tribal/shaman-like, people are going to go "Na'vi!"
Gorgeous work!
