Description LAVA BENDING THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO SEE. AM I RIGHT?

Interested parties can read up on my process here- [link]

As (quite) a few of you pointed out, her head looked a little...ah...caved in? Hahaha fixed! (hopefully!)

That's fantastic. And her statement is emphasised by lava exploding around her.

I like the theory (that just popped in my head looking at this) that lava bending would not be something that could be accomplished alone by anyone accept the Avatar who is both an earth bender and fire bender, both of which would be needed to manipulate lava.

Anyone else looking to do it would have to be an earth bender using some serious teamwork w/ a fire bender or vice versa. That's my thoughts on it anyway.

SketchyDrawings [2012-04-03 04:58:34 +0000 UTC]

Wow that's great! I think you got the contrast in hues just right here. Personally I think the red in the eyes could be toned down a bit just to show more of the black pupil, but I can definitely see why you'd want it to be fully red and glowing, since red is a strong color of power.
But what would lava bending be a branch of? Fire? Earth?

Hah, yes, well super duper magical skills don't come without some sacrifice. I hope your comment was intended as a joke, because there's really no need to get snarky on account of a stylistic choice, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elissinia In reply to toerning [2012-04-03 02:01:04 +0000 UTC]

You made a stylistic choice to make a glaring anatomical error? I like the drawing and all but there's only a certain extent to which you can claim it's stylistic. I can tell the stylization of the rest of the drawing doesn't match up to = large chunk of head missing. That's all right, though. Keep doing what you do, it's all lovely stuff.

elissinia In reply to elissinia [2012-04-03 02:02:12 +0000 UTC]

And you know, I apologize. I did read your tutorial where you said it was just a refined sketch, and you're probably tired of seeing comments about her noggin by now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to elissinia [2012-04-03 02:26:17 +0000 UTC]

Well on one hand, I can understand your frustration because I often see "style" used as an excuse for poor draftsmanship, and it appears I have fallen into that trap. If I had taken the time to write out my thoughts well, I would have said that I didn't notice it was a problem until multiple people pointed it out to me, and then I assumed that since I did it subconsciously, I could only attribute it to "style," but the more accurate term is "mistake."

On the other hand, your rudeness makes it difficult to hear what you have to say. I gave you a graceful out, and you chose to become only more belligerent. I'm calling you out on it because you didn't seem to get my subtler suggestion. I DO appreciate your criticism, but I think it would be worthwhile for you to consider your wording in the future.

elissinia In reply to toerning [2012-04-03 03:30:21 +0000 UTC]

:') Thank you, then. I'm very glad to hear you acknowledge that most artists use 'style' as an excuse, it's very refreshing to me. Again, I'd like to apologize for my poor attitude, especially when I saw that several people had called you out on the same mistake. I did get your subtler suggestion, but I decided to just truck on because I suppose I thought you were brushing it under the rug like so other many artists do. Thank you for responding to my rudeness with grace, and honestly, I think the piece is lovely and the mistake doesn't detract from it too terribly. I can only offer my apologies once more and thank you for your good attitude! Plenty of artists would be chomping at the bit to cuss me out, but you handled this well.

toerning In reply to elissinia [2012-04-03 03:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Aw, same to you, seriously! In an industry where so much is left up to luck and who you know, I find good grace is one of the few factors under our control that really makes a lasting impression, and it shocks me how many people resort to behaving childishly when it's so easy to be sensible! So thank you for being a good sport. There are very few people who would be able to accept an accusation of rudeness gracefully.

I'm glad you approve of the edit-- it very much needed to be done!!!

I'm so glad to see this conversation. I agree that too many people take themselves way too seriously and don't know how to forgive, let go, or admit when they're wrong. It's nice to see people try to understand the alternate view.

It's not exactly uncommon for this kind of a comment exchange to go the exact opposite way here on DA, and so every time I have a positive one like this I just want to shout it from the mountaintops hahaha thanks for reading!
