Once they're older, four years' age difference won't make that much of a difference. People are rarely exactly the same age as their significant other.
And even their brief platonic interaction was three times as awesome as any of the romangst between Zuko and Mai.

Lava is only superheated rock, so I'd be willing to bet only earthbenders could easily manipulate it.
Firebenders, on the other hand, seem to mainly deal with actual fire and heat manipulation (see Sozin cooling the volcano he and Roku were fighting) so I don't think they could move the rock just because it was hot. (but they'd be able to heat or cool it.) Then again, Katara looked like she could bend pretty solid mud (a lot of earth in it) in The Runaway, so who knows when two elements mix? I saw a fic where it was postulated that Zuko could bend scalding-hot water, if somewhat sloppily. And Toph could influence the air around dust and ash particles. So it's up to your imagination.
