Description What makes a man? Is it his body? His heart? His mind? His soul? Is the soul attached to the conscious mind, no matter what changes it has gone through, and where it resides?

So this is an illustration of a character idea I had a while back. I don't really feel like writing out a full description of him right here, but the abridged version is this:

In this picture, we have a robot. 100% constructed. Some parts are carbon-based, but most are not. He was originally a human being, but his brain got moved to a robotic body after a nasty accident (the body is the prototype of the method, and the guy is one of the chief developers of it). Over time, his brain (inside his robotic body) actually ceases functioning, but it doesn't negatively affect him...aside from realizing that he no longer has any flesh & blood parts at all.

He's naked.
Just throwing that out there.

With good reason, he needs to wear rather covering clothing in public, but him being dressed does not properly illustrate what his body is like.

I'm wondering, have you read any stories by Heinlein?
^^

You might like them, too.

I have not, actually. I have been meaning to read some of his stuff.

Depending on your sense of humor, you'll probably either really love it or hate it.

I think he's great.

Starship Troopers sounds interesting, partially to see just how extraordinarily pro-war he is.

JinnyMcG In reply to TolinKalin [2011-07-02 01:51:38 +0000 UTC]

It's not pro-war , but he doesn't seem to be a pacifist, I guess. There are other political and philosophical things in it that are quite interesting, though.

:3

Well, that's what I've read about it. It's just one of those things I intend to read at some point.

You know, that wonderfully specific "some time in the future."

Starship Troopers is probably my least favorite of his works, though. I would recommend The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Job: A Comedy of Justice, The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag (and other short stories with that compilation), The Door into Summer, Glory Road, and I Will Fear no Evil.

Those are the ones that came first to my mind; they're probably my favorites of the works I've read of his.

Okay, good to know! I'll see about getting one of those next time I'm looking for a book to read (which will probably be relatively soon).

Was there a specific heinlein thing that this picture made you think of?

JinnyMcG In reply to TolinKalin [2011-07-02 03:56:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes. It's not a direct thing; more based on several of the things you said.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress --- the computer network becomes conscious

I Will Fear No Evil --- the protagonist, an old man, has his brain transplanted into the body of a young woman

So I thought that some of the concepts in RAH's works might interest you.

:]

TolinKalin In reply to JinnyMcG [2011-07-02 04:11:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, that does sound interesting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JinnyMcG In reply to TolinKalin [2011-07-02 04:17:23 +0000 UTC]

I really liked I Will Fear No Evil; but I'm always hesitant to recommend it to people... RAH's work will often have sort of a "free love" attitude toward sex, and since that book deals with a man's brain inside a woman's body, there's the issue of gender and sexual attraction.

Heinlein's no prude.

XD Good to know. It's probably not a surprise that those sorts of subjects don't bother me.

JinnyMcG In reply to TolinKalin [2011-07-04 04:00:58 +0000 UTC]

I didn't think they would, so I went ahead and mentioned the more "offending" titles. Starship Troopers, maybe, is the least controversial of the ones I've read.

Oh my, this is deep.

It's also not a fish, which is what surprised me the most.

Hey, I do draw non-fish sometimes!

Most of my pictures basically boil down to, "I thought it was pretty." This one is more along the lines of "the concepts involved are fascinating."

Okay, I admit, this is only the 5th thing in my gallery not related to the ocean. But that's about 10%! It's not a tiny percentage...

Switching from quantity to percentage when you do not have a relatively large number of the subject in question is cheating. v_v

Oh, and I know his left hand was meant to be bladed, but it kinda looks like a paw. I've had that so many times before with my drawings. >.>

Androids can be neat, yup.

Huh. Looking at it, I apparently missed one of the pencil lines on that hand that makes it obvious his index finger is curled, and not just a nub. I'll probably correct that this evening (assuming I remember).

I doubt he'd be nearly as efficient at the whole soldier & secret police thing as Major Kusanagi... But yeah, something like that. XD

He's like a giant ken doll, with self awareness and better flexibility! O:
