Description Kevin Lawrence photographed by Tom Clark

Copyrighted Image - All Rights Reserved

This image of former pro-bodybuilder Kevin Lawrence was shot on Ektachrome Plus 100, a film that has now been discontinued altogether. I shot with my Zeiss 150 and scanned from the original 2¼ transparency. Cropping and curves were handled in Photoshop.

This series of Kevin was crafted on a rainy day in a small canyon in the Hollywood Hills. I worked with an umbrella tucked into my pants and perched on my shoulders to keep the rain off my camera. It was awkward and every time I squatted down to get the right angle I gave myself a good jab to the jewels. I was sore for several days afterwards, but hey, suffering for one's art is a noble thing, right? Kevin was nude for the duration of the shoot and chilled to the bone by the time we were done. I think his suffering was at least equal to mine.

Kevin was the first pro bodybuilder that I'd worked with and I was intrigued by his muscles, but only when they weren't flexed. He had plenty of other photographers interested in his pumped up bodybuilder poses while I was really only interested in his muscles at rest and the more graceful context of a classical setting.

Thank you. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold the original artist's print. But hey, I know where the original transparency is. lol

Your mastery of chiaroscuro is evident in this work, as it is in many of your others.  Just curious about this photo...did you light him up...artificially.. like a Rembrandt lighting effect, or is it all natural?

About the bodybuilding..I've worked out for years, and it was never in my mind for looking good while flexing, but rather to look good while not flexing at all..so I'm with you on the muscles at rest bit.

All natural light. I never use lights or flash of any kind when I'm working on location. Or reflectors for that matter. What the light from the sky is giving me is what I work with and gear my exposures to the skin tones. Sometimes, as in this case, that makes the background go dark and I'm perfectly fine with that.

The behind-the-scenes discomfort does not show.  You must have used a fast enough shutter speed, so his shivering didn't blur the image.

I love the way the shadows accentuate the musculature of the model. The texture and color coming out of black background.
