Description The Spiral Jetty Sirens featuring Tracy Painter, photographed by Tom Clark on the Spiral Jetty in Utah.

In April of 1970 Robert Smithson created the Spiral Jetty on the northeast shore of The Great Salt Lake in Utah. Three years later at the age of 35 he died in a plane crash in New Mexico while scouting a location for one of his projects. In honor of the Jetty's 40th anniversary and to pay tribute to Smithson I gathered 13 of Utah's most beautiful women and photographed them on the Jetty during the last few hours of sunlight on Saturday May 8th, 2010.

For most of its 40 years the Spiral Jetty has been underwater, appearing only rarely when the water levels of the Great Salt Lake recede during periods of drought. As fate would have it the Jetty is completely out of water now and the crusted salt mostly washed away from the dark stones that form it. The appearance of the Jetty on its 40th anniversary created the perfect opportunity for us to go out and play and create our own contemporary version of the Sirens from Homer's Odyssey.

My exuberant and heartfelt gratitude goes to the 13 gorgeous gals who put on bustiers and wandered out onto the Jetty barefoot to play and be photographed; each of you is a work of art and together you are a pirate's treasure.

The texturing here really gives this an exceptionally classic feel.

This has absolutely an old master feel to me. I also love that you took models with great curves.

Thanks Nathie. The girls were amazing on this project; all shapes and sizes and ages and the 13 of them had such a fun time together. I learned from this shoot to carry less judgement about a person's size. The biggest girls with the biggest curves were equally as beautiful as the smaller or more average girls. There was no difference in terms of the beauty and grace they presented to the camera. It was an amazing and beautiful thing to watch unfold out there that day. I became very emotional afterwards looking at the pictures.
