Description Unanimously hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the motion picture, the story is set in the 1600s, when the residents of a small Japanese village are seeking protection against repeated attacks by a band of marauding thieves. Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune). The samurai get acquainted with but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal. The climactic battle with the raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed. It's poetry in hyperactive motion and one of Akira Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements. This is not a film that can be well served by any synopsis; it must be seen to be appreciated and belongs on the short list of any definitive home-video library.

Drew for friend...

i love this piece,it does the movie justice. Toshiro Mifune is my all time favorite out of any possible combination you could think of for actors. As a matter of fact, i actually own a copy of that movie,as well as a nodachi(translation=horse-killer, the big sword Toshiro is holding in the picture above) that was created by the last of the samurai clans. kudos to you for such lovely work in capturing the emotions and expressions especially the details in Toshiros facial features.Deffinately +to favs

Thanks so much. He is one of my favorites also. I am just now getting some of his contemporary films outside of Samurai period works. I am glad you like it.

TOshiro Mifune, in my mind is the greatest Japanese actor in history; a talented actor that defined the genre and made an indelible mark in cinematic history.

My favorite Mifune flicks:

The Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress
Sanjuro
Yojimbo
Red Beard
Samurai I, II, & III
Hell In The Pacific (Opposite Lee Marvin)
Shogun (as the Emperor)

Toshiro Mifune is to a Samurai what Sean Connery is to a British Secret Agent.

Oh Yea. I so agree. Very cool post. I got Netflix and it gave me a chance to see some of his contemporary stuff. Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog and the one where he is a shoe maker, cant remember name of that. But yes he is so amazing. SPecially as Samurai.

Was watching Hell in the Pacific with a friend and his dad and the dad says why doesnt Lee Marvin just kill him with his knife he only has a stick. And we both turn to him and say he is the baddest man alive with that stick. lol good times...

Thanks for comments I hope you liked it.

Well, the wooden stick could be considered a weapon, like a boken, or wooden practice sword; probably reminiscent of his early movie Samurai III - Duel at Ganryu Island; where he kills his adversary with an wooden "sword" fashioned from an oar. He is the best Japanese actor ever.

Thank you... I have been watching the anime Samurai 7 and want to do a sequal piece to this with those characters. I think that would be fun.

If you can check out the anime it is cool seeing the similarities and differences between the two versions. And it had Kurosawa's family's blessing...

I've always loved Seven Samurai (probably my favorite film of all time, if I had to pick one), and this image, which is, I think, the cover of my DVD, has always sticken me as both lovely and powerful. Your 'interpretation' of it certainly does it justice, while making it also something unique in itself. The stark use of contrast between black and white, shadow and light, and the harshness it gives the characters is outstand.

Fat kudos. +fav for sure.

Wow... it's a really eye-catching piece! I've heard of the movie before, and even seen a scene or two... did you draw it from an actual scene in the movie, or did you just redraw the characters as you imagined it? (Either way I am amazed).
