Just as a general question... Would you have any tips as to where a 3D amateur could get some "education" or whatever I should call it, in Maya? Like, books, or tutorials, or anything xD
And I agree. It's a great program, and something I hope I can turn into a career at some point ^^

Maya offers a very easy-to-follow documentation, covering every single aspect of the software,
Within Maya look for the "Help" menu

Oh? I never actually looked into Maya's own help section, mainly because I'm used to software help sections being rubbish. But I'll have a look at it, the next time I'm tapping around in Maya.
Thanks

I love Autodesk Maya, it's so easy to use but putting on the textures is not easy.. I have the PLE, only I can have cause the software is expensive , but it's awesome!

Maya was the first 3D software i used, and to this day (having tried many other packages), Maya is still my favorite
Mainly due to its ease of use and advanced scripting, as well as its node-based engine which makes things far more accessible then many other apps I've tried.

TomerM In reply to scheherazadenerai [2008-06-20 11:52:09 +0000 UTC]

Everything is easy to use once you know the how to..
There's a really big documention which can help you learn just about any aspect of Maya (with lots of tutorials), you can find it in the 'Help' tab on the top right corner...
If you'll have any question or need any help with Maya just PM me

If you find Maya a bit complicated, you can always try some easier alternatives like C4D..

Good luck

Thanks for the tips, I had trouble with Maya at first cause I didn't understand any of the tutorials but I looked through that PDF thing on 'Getting Started with Maya' and I'm getting a bit better on polygon modelling. Do you have any tips on modelling? Thank so much for your help

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomerM In reply to scheherazadenerai [2008-06-22 19:29:57 +0000 UTC]

I mainly model with polygons, i have little experiance with NURBS or subdiv (i just don't like those methods)..
As for polygons, the best advice i can give you is to try and have a simplistic geometry (without too many unnecessary faces) for smoother and easier manipulation, later on, once you are finishing with the model, its ok to add details and smooth the polygonal model - If you aren't familiar with the Smooth and Bevel tool, i suggest you explore these, they are essential in smoothing polygonal models and defining edges, furthermore, you may want to explore the proxy tool, which is very useful for organical modelling (this tool allows you to see in real-time a high-res version of your model while you work with the original low-res one)..

If you want some real good throughout Maya training, i suggest you look up Digital Tutors, they're the best in the field (i learned a lot from them in modelling, lightening, rendering and even MEL scripting in less then 6 days).
Their lessons are very easy to understand, considering that they cover a lot of material in a relatively short time (3-6 hours)..

scheherazadenerai In reply to TomerM [2008-06-22 19:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much, I'll have a look for them... I agree, though NURBS seem really easy to model, if you screw one bit up then you've screwed everything up I'm on to SubDiv and that seems to be the most straightforward. Next step, animation! I'm so excited!

What version of Maya are you using? Are you using the Personal Learning thing or did you actually buy it, and if so, was it expensive??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomerM In reply to scheherazadenerai [2008-06-22 22:04:17 +0000 UTC]

The problem with NURBS is that they're not universal - for instance, modelling a non-organic object such as a electronic circuit would be quite impossible because you can't define the edges.
NURBS are good at one thing - making surfaces smoother with less geometry (good for organic things or just smooth objects in general), but even then they're lacking the precision that's found in polygons.
You can't use NURBS for modelling anything, but for certain things it can be very helpful, if you know how and when to use it.
Each artist and his own choice though, I prefer the precision and flexibility of polygons for just about anything i make, while others may use a combination of all 3 surface types for making their models.

As of the price of Maya - it is unreal for any software to cost $5000,
I am just a nasty little pirate, lol, hadn't bought it because i just can't afford it at all yet.
I plan to buy it in the future once I'll graduate high school and start working (in some good paying job)

scheherazadenerai In reply to TomerM [2008-06-23 11:19:25 +0000 UTC]

*gasp* Don't worry, I'm more shocked at the price... I think you may be right about polygons, they're definitely the best for detail. Btw that digital tutors website looks great, definitely bookmarked. So in using all three surface types, I guess you'd use 'convert to NURBS'... etc whenever you wanted to use it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomerM In reply to scheherazadenerai [2008-06-24 07:31:02 +0000 UTC]

Its possible,
Converting back and forth can be a good and reliable workflow in Maya (it can't ruin your model), many artists actually use that as a method to smooth their polygonal shape by converting to subdiv, while others may just convert from NURBS to subdiv in order to get a little more control...
Though, what i meant was that you can actually use different surface types for different things - like NURBS for smooth surfaces, Subdiv for organic things and polygons for non-organic and hard surfaces, many people do that.

So how is Maya so far? do you like it or still find it a bit hard?

p.s. You got some really nice stuff in your gallery, i think you'd do well in modelling characters and people

scheherazadenerai In reply to TomerM [2008-06-24 18:30:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh thankyou! Funny thing is, though I've done mostly realism in my gallery so far, I'd really love to start doing more fantasy stuff, maybe some apocalyptic dragon animations (except I don't think Maya Learning edition can export them ), thing is I'm so eager to do really complex things like that when I have, well, not very much technical ability LOL...

I get what you mean about the different surface types for different things, that will be useful! Maya is... well, I can model and do animation, but I'm just not very confident in general. For example, I'm not entirely sure how you would join a leg (that you'd modelled separately) onto a body? Once I went through the lessons I was able to grasp the basics. I think I still need a few more tutorials to be comfortable...

Hehe, thats not a problem, with time it'll come to you,
3D design is something that comes mostly from personal practice then formal studying - I couldn't model any real object no matter how much i read and learned in the documention, i tried fallowing countless tutorials but nothing helped.
All i was able to do were silly abstract-like shapes, i was just playing around without any idea of what i am going at, until one day, it just came to me like magic and i could model realistic objects, i could envision real-life objects as 3D and uncounciously model them in my head ^^
With many tutorials, much practice, it all comes together like a big puzzle.
