Description One of my favorite revelations of SVP 2011 is the pigment study of Archaeopteryx unavailing a black, crow-like color.

I wonder if I am the first to intentionally color it correctly.

"But every time it happens the only thing i see is...black, black, black...."

Quite nice. Though it's still not sure that the fossil feather on which the pigment study was performed is actually the same species as the skeletons. Possible, but not certain.

It's as if black's the new green for dinosaurs.

How you know that Archaeopteryx has the crow-like color on the wing ?

It was revealed at SVP this year.

Aw crap, I was going to eventually redo Archaeopteryx with a magpie-inspired black & white color scheme. What species was the study done on? I'm going to say mine is another species...

don't worry, there has been a feathered dinosaur with colours sort of like a magpie. [link]
it's anchiornis

There is also another feathered dinosaur with the colors of the magpie, the magpie itself! X)

Thank you so much for informing me about something everyone and their grandmother has known for about two years already.

And not even the whole wing - only the primary coverts, so the rest of the wing could be differently-colored.

Only the wings are definitively black, so you are still safe putting white on the body, or you can just say it's another species as you said. I'm fairly certain the study was done on A. ligrographica.

I'm pretty sure there were some black Archies on the last version of DinoForum. I liked Archie the Crow back then and I still like it now. I wonder, did they shine like rooks ? That would be *so* awesome.

That would be pretty awesome. I'm sure it's possible.

Darn, if I were any good at photomanipulation...

Great work, but I think it may be a bit of a stretch to say that this is definitely the correct coloration. All we really know for sure is that the coverts on the wings were "most probably" black, but the rest of the wings and body could be quite different.

That's true. I should reword it to say "some of the true colors."

I've been thinking about whether I should rework my Archaeopteryx at all. [link] Do you think it would be enough to just darken the coverts a bit?

Tomozaurus In reply to EWilloughby [2011-11-12 06:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think you'd be safe just to darken it a little.

You should've continued the crow homage and made the feet grey. XD

Meh, thought about it but thought it'd be boring. It looks better this way.
