Description
A reconstruction of a Jurassic member of Corystospermaceae. We need to stop calling these things "seed ferns", it doesn't really make any sense. This is based primarily on some really nice specimens of Umkomasia from the Triassic of Queensland, but with Cycadopteris rather than Dicroidium leaves. The Queensland specimen is described as being a probable sapling, and Umkomasia spp. are known to reach tree size (trunk diameter 40+cm), but this plant is supposed to be from the Jurassic of Mid-europe, where the vegetation is frequently described as being low-growing. I have also seen the cycadopteris plant being described as "small woody shrubs" multiple times in the literature. I'm not so sure there is evidence for either of these claims, but that is a discussion for another time...Related content
