Thanks bud! It was a combination of splatter with a tooth brush and stippling with a sponge. I used low-tack masking tape to tape off all the areas I didn't want to get messy, so as to avoid having to tidy up the lineart afterwards, then went to town, building around the semi-circular shape I'd already outlined with the brush.
