yay colours ^^ this is my first serious attemp at colouring something...I bet you can tell. Curse machinery
my metal doesn't really look like metal 
His harp shouldn't be so dark either.....*fail*

how can you color pics like this?
all my pics just have solid coloring with some shadowing

Well to be honest I really didn't know what I was doing XD It was the first picture I ever coloured. What really helped me was having an awesome reference shot. I basically copied the colours. For the actual colouring I had a base colour and then kept adding shades of the same colour progressively darker. I used the blur tool to blend it in all nicely and I can't remember what the other one is called but it looks like a little finger (at least it does in opencanvas) to move the colours around into the shape or area that I wanted. When I was adding shades onto the base colour I used the airbrush tool because its not so solid looking, that way I could add a little bit here and there without it looking 2D. I use the airbrush to add all my shadows cause I really don't like such solid shadows. For the lighting and stuff I just looked at a picture to try and decide how it would look since my imagination fails. The best advice I can give is to have a reference picture (or a bunch), thats how I was able to decide how the metal shines and wear the armour curved and stuff. I also read a lot of turorials here on DA

It doesn't look that bad actually. For help with the metal, just remember that metal isn't always just different shades of grey, it reflects colours from clothing, the sky, their surroundings, etc. Also, you can add more almost-white highlights to metal so make it seem more reflective and... Metaly. XD
Good job though, I'm glad you're finally colouring stuff.
